Yes, but iwhat f you arrive on a UK or AU passport to the US?

Then you need to show you have owt back to Aus/UK or have a valid visa to stay in the USA.

Most people already have returns so it is not an issue, but I have always been asked when flying on a cheap JQ 1 way to HNL to prove I was leaving.

I've entered the US from London on a one-way points flight on BA, had a return booked back to the UK on AA, the only connection between these both was that they were on my QF website. No checks at LHR, and I wasn't asked about my return at US immigration.

Then a likely infringement for the airline.

Having worked in check in for an international airline we were always told to check visas and or OWT. You will never be aware that there has been an infringement, but they do happen and are very costly to the airline.

Given that BA has a lot of flights to the US, and encourages OLCI, along with passengers using the VWP, then it can't be much of a problem for BA.

I understand that for citizens of countries that need visas, the airline can get fined if they allow a passenger to board without a visa.

BA enforces a "documents check" visit for certain cities (including Moscow/St Petersburg/Tripoli/Kiev and Longhaul destinations). I believe this includes U.S destinations as well, although could be wrong.

I've also got both an AU & UK passport. Generally I travel for work on OW Explorer RTW tickets so usually enter the US ex-London and leave from LAX or JFK flying West back to Aus.

I use my AU passport to enter and leave Australia and then put it away and use my UK one thereafter, using my UK passport details for the airline advance info and US border forms stating my nationality as UK and country of residence Australia.

Obviously that passport is far more convenient for moving around Europe so I just keep using it elsewhere. I've never had an issue or question in numerous trips.

Cheers,
Steve.

I've been to Moscow and Tripoli, and went through the document check. Never with my UK passport. I'm guessing they will check if it's a non-VWP passport though.

My belief in T5 is that if you are a person/passport of interest, that you won't get through the security boarding pass swipe and will be referred back to the Passport check desk.

While it hasn't happened to me, I've seen it happen to others, and when I once went to the visa check desk to get my BP sorted, they asked "were you turned away from security?"

For Tripoli , if you check in online/self service it is mandatory to visit the visa desk ; if checking in at a check in agent then they will check for a valid visa and set the visa checked entry in the booking

I also routinely enter and leave Australia on my Oz passport and travel around inbetween on my UK passport.

However, I have often wondered what would happen if I (accidently or otherwise) leave Oz using my UK passport and then re-enter Oz using my Australian passport. Would Australian immigration actually try and deny an Australian citizen entry back into Australia until I have supplied extra details such as when I left and where have I been in the meantime? And what if I refused to supply such details?

I've always thought that this is really none of their business (although clearly where I have been is definitely the business of Customs and Quarantines)

Just a though experiment I have had as I juggle passports standing in line...

Cheers

I doubt you could "accidentally" leave Oz on your UK passport, as there would be no record of a Visa/ETA recorded for your UK passport, and outbound immigration would certainly want to talk to you about that.

Indeed. I have both passports with me when I travel and I accidently handed a UK one over by mistake and was then asked for another passport

Good points

I did arrive at the aiport once to find that I only had my UK passport in my travel documents. A natural mistake because I actually have more than 2....

My first thought was that I would use it and get my Australian passport sent on by courier later on. Luckily I found the Oz passport amongst some other junk in my luggage and was able to use it.

You can't. Passport control when leaving Australia will need to see evidence in your passport of your right to have been in Australia, which you will not have in your British passport.

If you give them the British passport (as I absent mindedly did once...) they will scan it first then go through the passport to find your visa, then get angry at you for giving them the wrong passport, then take you over to the office at the side of passport control (near the GST refund counter) to correct your details.

can someone explain to me some of these acronyms please?

owt, JQ, HNL

I usually have a T5-T5 transfer from Edinburgh when leaving the UK. With OLCI nobody checks your documents ex EDI for the domestic sector to London however the scan of the onward BP at Flight Connections in T5 fails and you get politely directed to the BA desk adjacent for them to check your passport. Go back to security and the boarding pass scans ok and they let you through.

Obviously some flag in the database the BA ground staff need to set for the security scan to pass ok.

Steve.

This brings up other questions for me. Are you originally an Australian or British citizen? I need to understand the context of your statement below: "stating my nationality as UK and country of residence Australia."

As I now have dual nationality and my chosen work determines that I am virtually a perpetual traveller, I could ask somewhat rhetorically, what is my 'nationality'? When is it best for me to be one nationality or the other, depending upon travel circumstances? (I do have addresses in both Australia and Britain that I could claim as my 'residence'.)

Are you originally an Australian or British citizen?

I was born in UK and also have Australian citizenship. Taking out Australian citizenship doesn't affect your British citizenship in any way so it's true for me to state my citizenship as either British or Australian depending on what suits the circumstances.

As I use my UK passport to enter the US I state my citizenship as British to keep things aligned with the documentation but note my country of residence as Australia.

Cheers,
Steve.
