I've got three Flex DSC bookings from Barcaldine to Longreach which are due to take off in a couple of weeks. Any thoughts on what I should do with them? To be honest it is that long since I even considered taking a flight I can't even remember what we are supposed to do with them!! Help!!

The DSC validity period is end of Feb right? If they're flex just get a refund, assuming you don't need the SC / want to roll it over into your next year.

Flex Y fares have a refund fee of $99, before departure. You forfeit the fare if you don't cancel by the deadline.

Whilst many here thought it may have been a great alternate way to secure DSC, unfortunately it is worse than the old gift voucher method in terms of flexibility (no name changes for free) and validity (1 year normally). Due to Covid I think QF has extended the validity until end of 2022 however, but it wouldn't carry any DSC.

Didn't realise this, is this only for domestic or international also?

Domestic only. International there's no refund penalty, but there is a stiff no show fee if you don't cancel in time.

hope QF cancel the flight(s) then you can ask for the value to be either refunded, or issued as voucher - with DSC attached till the end of the year as they seem to be still offering?

Just trying to think outside the box, but domestic Flex Y allows free changes right?

Your original fare may be used as credit towards a new fare of equal or higher value, provided the new fare conditions are met.

At the time of making the change you must pay:
any fare difference between the fare for your new booking and the original fare.
Once your booking is made the current service fee can be viewed anytime at qantas.com/your booking.

Your new booking must be for travel anywhere on the Qantas network within 12 months of the date that the original ticket was issued.

Hypothetically, could you 'change' the booking to an international route booked as Flex Y, pay the difference, then cancel and get a full refund per the International Flex Y rules..?

@RSD similar to what @sudoer posted you could change your booking by changing x2 of your flights back to credits then call up QF and change the third booking to a cheap domestic J fare and use the x2 credits as part payment to make up the fare difference and pay any balance via CC. You can then cancel the J booking for a full refund without having to pay any fees. You will just have to wait for the refund to come through.

IIRC- The most restrictive fare rules apply. $99 cancellation fee still applies.

You are not correct and may need to take a closer at the rules around what is considered a change or cancelation as well as accepting a credit rather than a refund. These are where the QF rules become tricky and are two very different things.

When the Feb 20 DSC offer came out I asked a question which I assumed most would glance over seen here @CaptJCool provided the answer and it would seem that a few jumped on board with the idea. Fast forward a few months in a post Covid break out I had 20+ QF flex (Y) flights (BCI-LRE) that were only booked as they were cheap and could be changed or converted to credits without a fee. In May 20 I started combining these into domestic J bookings and then cancelled, the only cash that was not returned was the CC fee for some bookings only. The $99 cancellation fee was never applied when cancelling the J booking.

You got lucky doing this then. Most likely they were overwhelmed enough with the workload that they did not look at your ticket properly.

If it's handled strictly by the book, the most restrictive rules apply, meaning the $99 refund penalty would apply. When you upgrade fare type, the change conditions of the new fare would apply but the most restrictive refund rules would apply still.

BEEN REISSUED FROM A NON-REFUNDABLE FARE THE
          ORIGINAL REFUND CONDITION APPLIES.

Yes, this was magical.

I converted seversl to flight credits and left the other two as “live” bookings.

QF Shifted one from the 100th anniversary date so I ignored it until I got emailed and phoned (from a NZ Number) and then took the refund.

the second one UNCHANGED from 31 December was refunded in full. As it’s a flexi Y and common business practice for these to be cancelled and refunded (or so I thought....)

I am aware of this rule however I have been using the same process for the past few years and it has always worked. I stumbled across it by accident after cancelling a J booking that had been made using various flight credits.

I have one of these DSC flex credits as well and my travel credit is due to expire on Thu 25 Feb 2021 (it didn't automatically extend like all the others). Do you think Qantas will extend the date of this if I call them up? thanks

I’m pretty sure it’s addressed here
  • Flight Credits are valid until the expiry date shown, with the exception of Flight Credits for which an extension has been applied.
    - Any existing, unused Flight Credits issued after 31 January 2019 originally booked for travel until 31 March 2021 are valid for bookings and travel until 31 December 2022. This will take a few weeks to update in the system. Just request your flight credit before your scheduled date of departure.

Thanks, I meet that condition for that booking but that particular flight credit hasnt updated with an expiry date (all my other ones have updated to 31 Dec 2022 - even bookings I cancelled only just last week).
