I guess this is mildly topical.

Air stewardess drunk on flight from Dubai - Telegraph

Stephanie Partington, 24, was breathalysed by airport police when the Emirates Boeing 777 landed at Birmingham International Airport on its return from Dubai on April 23 this year after fellow airline staff raised concerns about her behaviour.A blood test found 164mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood – twice the legal drink-drive limit of 80mg.

She was eight times over the legal limit for flight attendants, which is just 20mg.

That is pretty "impressive". Assuming no drinks while on the flight, she was still blowing 0.16 at least 8 hours after drinking (6 hr flight, a couple of hours of "prep" time, assuming no alcohol after starting pre-flight duties).

So it was a VERY big night for her.

Yes she should have refused the shift, and I do wonder what would have happened if there was an emergency on-board. She isn't the first flight crew member to do this and won't be the last.

Definately a career limiting move!

DUB is the code for Dublin. I think you mean DXB.

Based on the actual story, I'd struggle to believe that the FA in question had managed to blow .164 upon arrival without either:
a) drinking on board, or
b) being obviously sloshed in a fashion that should have had her sent home for a lie down by her boss as soon as she turned up for work at DXB.

If it was option A, then she really only has herself to blame and deserves the sacking she got.

Option B is a bit more ambiguous. The article said that she had been only recently hired by EK, so maybe she felt a bit of pressure (whether self imposed or otherwise) to prove herself. Assuming that EK is a reasonable employer, she should have been honest and said that she was unable when they called her. However, once she turned up intoxicated, she should have been sent home until she had sobered up by the boss rather than allowed to work. Even if it left EK short an FA for a flight, I'd say they'd have been better off with that than having to deal with a drunk FA (as long as minimum FA numbers for safety requirements were there, of course). EK should definitely be looking at this since most civil aviation authorities would take a rather dim view of allowing a FA (whose primary role is safety related) to work while drunk, I dare suggest.

Yes quite right! I was caught up in my ignorant stereotyping of the Irish!* :p

*For the more, how can I put it, ah yes, literal**, amongst us, it was in fact a cough up on my part and had nothing to do with my perception of the Irish. this comment was made in a pathetic attempt to glean some humour.

** Not that there is anything wrong with being literal. ^

^ (This is in fact a lie!
