I empathize with you Pushka....because I understand what your first post was referring to... re SIN.(and seems a few other airports) .pax can freely enter the huge high volume pax/inbound/outbound/retail area without EVERY cabin bag being screened..even in OZ domestic.pax/general public MUST go thru screening BEFORE entering the mass arrivals/departures area of a terminal.. I think Pushka is just highlighting that SIN (and some other) airports could be more 'vulnerable' to an 'event' deeper inside its terminals...

From what I recall of prior discussions here, isn't different liquid standards between carriers from DPS? i.e. no duty free on JQ, but VA and GA?

JQ now allow DF at DPS! I tried it a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps it's due to the new terminal?

With SQ ( I would imagine it applies to all transiting airlines though) if you are routed through Munich.....all drinks including any bought duty free get placed into a rubbish bin.

The time I transited there, there was a lot of expensive un-opened alcohol being binned!

EU/USA rules. DF purchased in SIN (and a handful of other places) in a tamper proof bag would be allowed if transiting to another EU airport. Also the USA allows DF to be purhased in the 'sterile' area - meaning after the primary LAG check - in many countries.

i dont think its for duty free. As long as its in the Sealed bags from the shops i think that is ok.

It was more for cans of drink and bottles of water. But given this is all bought from inside the
terminal after the first scan/xray im not sure why they do it.

They def did not do it on our flight from Fiji to USA

The tamper proof bags make zero difference for flights to Australia. They can be accepted at some other countries however.

Given that the US has stopped this screening how come Australia still persists with it ?

It still exists on flights to, from and within the USA. The US seems more acceptable than Australia of LAGs bought in 'sterile' areas - meaning after the primary LAG check.


I think it's a bit odd that Australia has some of the toughest LAG rules for international flights yet one of the easiest (meaning LAGs are OK) for domestic flights. Many countries still have LAG restrictions on domestic flights.

At BKK where they sometimes screen you a second time, I have asked the security guys what the reason behind the second screening and they have advised (whether correct or not) that they are not employed by the airport but are employed by the operating airline, mainly for additional security checking that the airlines want. The LAGs happen to be a simple thing they can target.

I'm always surprised that there is no screening at entry into airports like Singapore. More personal and property damage could be done in an airport if someone was so inclined, than on a plane.

There are plenty of Heckler and Koch MP5s and SAR21s walking around SIN to take care of that.

3. Arrival search SIN

There are plenty of Heckler and Koch MP5s and SAR21s walking around SIN to take care of that.

It is also noticeable that the people carrying them often maintain tactical spacing. As do the blokes with guns who walk around Paris.

Ah, so that's one of the countries that has arrivals screening. I imagine indon flights may also have arrivals screening.

I think it's cough as well, it's to protect that countries duty free... I came back from CMB last year with a bottle of scotch brought in CMB, once I landed in Singapore... I was told I cannot take it on the flight even if it's in a sealed bag as all duty free is... I then proceeded to the toilet where I gave the bottle of scotch to an airport cleaner haha I was pissed but there was no way I was handing it over to security so they could sell it off and make money!!!!!

Yep had that happen to me in both HKG and BKK (im sure that happens with almost every inbound flight to Australia and the US).... I just think its just goddam pointless

Oh btw, my mate flew Air China from Beijing to Sydney, and they don't do that pointless bag check. Anyone flew from China (not Hong Kong) and gotten that??

Pushka mentioned (a lot of posts back) the time when no carry on was permitted at all. We flew out of Edinburgh the day after the Glasgow airport attack in 2007. Luckily we were only flying to Dublin but the only things we could carry on the plane were our passports and and I think (but don't quote me) wallets. From memory medication was OK as well but no mobile phones, cameras, handbags, backpacks at all. Consider it travelling light.
Have also had lots of carry on bag searches over the years - Paris CDG sticks in my mind as the queue was very long and there were about 6 or so officers at tables doing the search.
Cusco had a more hands on approach to screening as they hand searched all luggage before check in. You had to unlock it and explain what things were (e.g. what was in the bag? dirty clothes). It did slow check in down somewhat.

I just found a tube of sunburn cream in my hand bag when travelling via plane from Istanbul to Athens. Not declared and not in the plastic bag. Hmmm.

I've gone through a few screenings with lip balm in my pocket or handbag and it hasn't been picked up.
