Double HH points with Visa

Thanks to Mark at Oz Travel Points, we have a new(ish) double points offer from HH and Visa.

I'm not sure I'm overly wrapped in this promo. To pay with Visa, I'd have to forego the double points on spend with AMEX that I already get. With the AMEX, I get double points on the card based on the entire amount in AUD and the points are airline miles which I rate as being worth at least two to three times the value of a HH point. So even if I had a Visa which gained 1 airline point/AU$ (which I don't), that means I lose one airline point/AU$ by not using AMEX. To get what? 10 extra HH points per US$ and only on the base spend (not on tax)?


EDIT: Quick calc.

Assume a AUD200 Hilton bill:

Pay by AMEX - 400 airline points (@1.5AUc), (USD138 ex tax) = 1380 HH base points (@0.5AUc) = AU$12.90 worth of points
Pay by Visa - 120 to 200 airline points (@1.5AUc), 1380 x 2 = 2760 (@0.5AUc) = $15.60 to $16.80 worth of points

So marginally better off using Visa if you get .6 or better points/$ assuming stackable HH offers. Perhaps this needs to be adjusted to take into account for the possible loss of the AMEX $50 credit offer as well!

Most HH promos do stack, but as with all things in life, YMMV.

Dates are fairly well explained. I have my doubts that a pre-paid reservation outside of those dates would post.

All pre paid dates are within the promotion period, are you suggesting that prepaid within the dates would be eligible (IYO)

My exact words were pre-paid reservation.......not pre-paid dates.

I also said I have my doubts....and as much as I wish I might have been born into the Hilton family, I wasn't and I don't have any say in the promo, so here is the Ts&Cs for you to read and decide your prospects.......

I can't see any mention of dates paid.....just nights stayed.

Thank you very much for your opinion, In my simple mind pre-paid dates and pre-paid reservation were meaning the same thing. I was simply trying to clarify what you had said. I don't really think the tone of your answer was necessary, but again, thanks for the help

No problem, I certainly wasn't being critical and didn't mean it to look that way. I will be able to answer my own question tonight with a stay at H-BNE.

As I said in the post above, I will be able to answer my own question and now I will share a quirky thing with you. It didn't work in BNE because it turned out that I had pre-paid using a non Valid ie not Platinum, Visa card. BUT 2 days later I had another pre-paid stay at H-AKL and I did receive the points. Now here's the quirky thing, I pre-paid using a non valid visa (ie it wasn't a Platinum, Signature or Infinite) but on check-in I supplied a Visa Platinum card for the pre-auth and extras. I didn't use any extras and on check-out my balance for the stay was zero, so no charges at all on the Visa Plat. Just checking the points which posted and I have the full amount of the offer.

Even I know this shouldn't have happened
