It's amazing what lengths Qantas will go to for customers OUTSIDE Australia.

I just booked a SFO-MEL-SEA (via LAX each time) multi-point trip for travel in May (August return) for US$1233 including taxes (About AU$1320 with the way the dollar is at the moment).
A similar trip MEL-SFO return (opposite directions) on the same dates is AU$2084

Anyway - here's my question:
A friend of mine is travelling QF25 AKL-LAX on the return trip with me, under a separate booking. I am WP, she has no status. I was originally allocated 27G (on a 2 Class 747), and the Qantas customer service agent on the phone would not let me allocate her to 27F, because 'these seats are for platinum only'. Hence, I had to move back to 35F/G

Has anyone else had any experience like this? If only they would implement some sort of policy like this for domestic flights, then I may actually get my seating preference for a change ;)

Second question:
I booked the QF25 leg of my trip as two separate flights (ie, QF25 MEL-AKL and QF25 AKL-LAX), because it let me do that for the same price.
Will I be credited with 20+40 SC's or just 45? Are they smart enough to pick up that i've done that?

Cheers,

Josh

If its booked as two segments then expect it to post as 2 segments. But of course you have paid extra fuel surcharges in the pursuit of extra SCs.

Nope - I paid exactly the same amount for it, even though it was booked as 2 segments. Fuel fines and taxes for Qantas flights originating in the USA are only from $120-150 total.

Also - They don't charge you any credit card fee either, saving you another $18 as well.

True. Booking return airfares from BKK or SIN is cheaper and does not involve changes to airfares to reflect season of travel as experienced in Australia.

Can you get the two bookings linked? If this is possible then you should be able to request 2 seats together in the part of the WHY cabin reserved for high status frequent flyers.

From my experience if this is ticketed as 2 separate sectors then you will receive SCs for the 2 separate sectors.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Josh, I'm willing to bet you were not speaking to "Qantas Premium" when you got the line: 'these seats are for platinum only'.

"These seats" are actually reserved for QP, PS, SG, WP & CL.

Also, you should be able to ling the bookings and sit in the premium section. As a WP, if you are into Exit Rows (and it is available), you should be able to get the both of you preallocated into 29B/C. Make sure you:
  1. Get the bookings linked as TCP's.
  2. Contact the premium desk by calling Oz East Cost office hours Mon-Fri or Sat & Sunday mornings
  3. If not answed "Qantas Premium", ask to be transferred.
  4. Once speaking with "Qantas Premium" ask for "a request to be submitted", rather than straight out request an exit seat.

The premium staff need to refer the request to a 'seating' group, and the change should happen in the next day or so.
