It was always surprising that people tried this. It was more common on domestic flights, and the offenders were mostly (but not always) from the USA.

I recall a couple (Germans I think) who plonked themselves down in Business before we'd even left the tarmac at Tahiti. I was going to call the gendarmes and have them removed, but the CSM just wandered back to them with the credit card machine so that he could charge another few thousand. Fastest they'd moved in years.
