Read this funny story (only because I wasn't on the flight).

Why don't airlines upgrade you when seats are empty? Flight turns back after economy passengers upgrade themselves to business class

Even if there are empty seats in business class, airlines won't just let anyone sit in there - as several passengers recently found out on a United Airlines flight.

It was always surprising that people tried this. It was more common on domestic flights, and the offenders were mostly (but not always) from the USA.

I recall a couple (Germans I think) who plonked themselves down in Business before we'd even left the tarmac at Tahiti. I was going to call the gendarmes and have them removed, but the CSM just wandered back to them with the credit card machine so that he could charge another few thousand. Fastest they'd moved in years.
