I had an Aussie TA book a DONE3 starting in KUL last year. Since there is no DONE3 fare quotes for Australia, I only had to pay the ex-Malaysia DONE3 fare. So that was a good option. But of course the DONE3 does not allow travel through Australia. It suited my needs at the time based on where I needed to go.
