I booked HBA-MEL-ADL yesterday (first leg red-e deal in Y, second leg not red-e, but also in Y) for flights on 8 November.

Put in upgrade requests for both legs today and was surprised to see both confirmed straight away.

Is this normal practice these days (at least for a QFF plat) ?

For domestic, yes, and has been for some time and is not a WP privilege.

Yes and no. Dom upgrades tend to be issues out immediately on a first come first served basis, however AFAIK once the upgrade pool starts to run low it turned into a lottery.

This is not a WP benefit (not everything can be WP only, otherwise they'd lose the lower levels faster than you can blink)

It is normal however their has been an issue over the last 12 or 18 months where even with the inventory being available it was not allowing one to upgrade. In order to avoid the lottery then a call to the Plat Team was required.

I am hoping that they have now fixed this issue finally and we can go back to where it was.

Thanks all. I did try a MEL-HBA upgrade about 3 weeks out a few months ago at the end of an int'l trip and got it posted as 'requested'. Never came through and of course J seats on the flight were empty (but I know QF doesn't necessarily fill cabins with upgrades).

I have a booking at the moment that's in exactly this state (upgrade showing as "requested" even though award inventory available), so looks like it is not fixed.

I would call up. QF have been able to confirm the upgrade on the telephone for me with previous bookings where it got stuck.

If you booked the flight then went to upgrade it straight away it will show as requested.

You can either call up and get them to process it straight away if there is U class available or cancel the award request and resubmit and it should come through straight away.

I had this issue last year and they said that the upgrade request was done before the ticket was issued.

if there is available award inventory in business class it's confirmed instantly. been like this for ages

... for 15 years at least for Domestic upgrades ... however there has been a period in the last year or so when the online facility appeared broken and did not happen as it should have..

Until some more recent changes, if award availability in U did not exist at time of request, then no upgrade would occur, nor would there be any waitlisting ... the punter would have to keep checking on the hope some became available.

I cancelled and resubmitted the request and it went through immediately. So it does seem like there is still a problem with the system.

Has anyone ever had a domestic upgrade clear automatically after it was wait-listed? I've never experienced it myself even though it is advertised as a possibility.

I have. You get an SMS saying it has gone through (I've usually had them clear on the morning of the flight).

I don't change it most of the time. I put in an ExpertFlyer alert and then cancel and re-request if I get the alert.

I've had a dom upgrade clear automatically, received an SMS about T-24...

Mine always seem to clear at T-24, but then my bookings are usually only confirmed a week or so prior and have to get the request in quickly.

Yes, have had this happen. One at t-9 and the other t-72

Add another to the list as well: my last DOM upgrade request was made ~3-4 weeks before the flight and sat in 'requested' state until about T-48, at which point I received the SMS saying it had gone through.

mrpooky.

Just a heads up.
I still think the online domestic upgrade request is still a bit broken.
If Red Roo could look into it that would be fantastic :)
I booked a simple SYD-MEL today and submitted a points upgrade request which immediately showed as "Requested". The flight was wide open in J including Award seats.
I telephone the Plat Desk and they couldn't explain why it wouldn't have been instant and processed the upgrade for me.
Upon selecting my seat I am so far the only pax in the cabin (it's a 767 BTW).
This is potentially costing QF lost custom and should be rectified ASAP.

Hi Princess It has been like that for around 12 to 18 months I have contacted QF about it many times and the response is we are working on it.

One explanation on here is the time that one does the request.

Did you request the upgrade as soon as you purchased the flight or was it after the tickets had been fully processed and issued?

Their seems to be a lot of issues at the moment around upgrades, seat selection etc.

Based on my recent experience, there is definitely an issue if you put the request in immediately after booking. It goes into never-never land and remains "requested" indefinitely. I have given my most recent booking ref# to Red Roo for them to look at.

Yes that's when I put the upgrade in. Seems very weird that we can't do it successfully online but the call centre can.
