Hi,

I'm taking my first flight as a SG on Monday: QF 1011, MEL-HBA. I know for such a short flight it's a huge waste to spend points on an upgrade, but I feel like splurging.

On to my questions. I'm travelling with my housemate, and I'd want to upgrade him as well. He's not a QFF member, but we're travelling on the same booking. According to QF, I can only upgrade eligible family members, so I'd have to claim him as my domestic partner. While our (non-)relationship is possibly not what Qantas had in mind when they were specifying what a domestic partner is, we have been sharing a house for years. Does Qantas just accept your word when you claim domestic partnership status for upgrade purposes? We could show proof that we live at the same address, but that's all.

The next question I have is on the relative merits of requesting an upgrade in advance over doing an ODU in the QP. Are there reasons to do one rather than the other?

Finally, what do you think the chances are of getting the upgrades? ExpertFlyer is currently showing (for me) 1C as occupied, the rest of row 1 as blocked, and 2AB blocked as well, leaving 6 seats free. Do they allow upgrades until the cabin is full, or only up to some set quota?

Thanks.

(1) Qantas never check about the relationship. They put this in place a few years ago to keep the ATO happy. They really couldn't care less.

(2) If you are on one booking you must upgrade both of you.

(3) You requuest the upgrade on line via my bookings. Just click on right and it will guide you through.

Usually for domestic bookings it will say "Domestic Upgrade Seat not available at this time - try again later" but you can be lucky.

(4) Go through step (3) and report back - be quick though as upgrade seats dry up.

With 1 Y seat left and 5 J, I dont like your chances!

The merits of requesting an upgrade online is you get it if its available before the flight, ODUs via the QP if available are on a first come first served basis on the day and usually come after CL upgrades have been processed .

and this is all assuming that they are fares that allow upgrading...I trust you didn't buy red e-deals :o

Only 1 U class seat available - you won't be able to upgrade both tickets online.
Try your luck in the lounge!
