I had a trip to see the Great barrier reef booked with my (then) partner, but unfortunately she left me last fortnight and doesn't want to go anymore..

I'm still keen on going and will likely try to invite one of my mates or my dad.

I booked these myself on my card for the taxes and paid my points for the classic rewards x 2.

I've been trying to work out Qantas' rules on this but it seems quite confusing. Do I need permission from my now ex to change the passenger name? And will I have to do this over the phone?

If you paid on your points you can change the name. It’s a call job I’m afraid.

I've tried to cancel family members tickets over the phone a couple of times and both times Qantas insisted they needed to speak to the passenger before they can cancel the ticket. It didn't matter that the tickets were booked on my account using my points and my credit card.

Really? Damn ….

I've always been able to make changes to my family's trips even if I'm not travelling, but am listed as the travel arranger.

I called up- got through in 5 minutes... however was told I could get a full refund on her fare for the points and taxes... but that wouldn't necessarily free up an award seat for the replacement passenger... looks like a solo holiday for me

If it is a Classic Flight Reward on Qantas (no JQ) then you can change the name and if the travel is before October it won't even cost you anything.

Regarding permission, I have had agents ask to speak with the other passenger on the booking to confirm changes and I just briefly handed over the phone without further identification (if there are no QFF or contact details for the other passengers that's really all they can do).

IME in changing bookings for family booked through my account I have never had an issue changing flights, timings or routes however if cancelling out right QF have wanted to talk the family member, I just either hand over the phone or conference them in.
