I think the thing here is that people might be confusing airline/hotel status with actual status. Ultimately, the "status" afforded people here are subject to rules (or the whims) of a commercial enterprise who is trying to convince you to spend more of your (or your company's) money with them, thereby improving their profits. This has very little to do with someone's status as a person.
It was mentioned on these threads previously, but people that go hunting status with hotels and airlines in an attempt to make themselves sound more important to other people come out looking very much like "Barton" on a date with Patty the Plain Plump Spinster:
Date 2 come fly with me « Patty the Plain Plump Spinster
We here on the forums revere WP, WP1, CL or things like AA Concierge Key. But the rest of the world doesn't, and for them, when we insist on telling them about how important we are, we look arrogant. Take this passage from that blog post:
I cringe when I read that, every time.
I think, for me, my airline/hotel "statuses" are a means to an end - I consider them good value - I pay a bit more, but I get a lot more out of them. But I'm not a better person for having them.
What makes me unique or special are other, more untangible things. And that's where I derive my personal sense of confidence that I am a good person. Not from my hotel and airline elite statuses.
