Does BA have a new premium tax (not UK-related)????

Just got off the phone to AA and was having a award ticket issued SYD-BKK.

Was told that there was an additional BA-related premium tax of US$166 for the ticket. I of course know of the UK related departure surcharges for premium tickets, but have never heard of this one before.

She wasn't able to give me any more information on it, but was adamant that it was payable. Does anyone have any idea what it could be for??

BA do charge more in Fuel Surcharge for premium tickets they issue:

(SYD-BKK is $US100 in Y, $US150 in J for example).

Generally though, I thought AA should charge their own figure for fuel surcharges on award tickets, rather than passing on the fuel surcharge of the operating carrier.

Perhaps the agent is confusing the Fuel Surcharge that AA is showing as a BA specific tax?

These are the costings I got for taxes and surcharges on SYD-BKK on an AA award:

BA J: US$230.80
BA Y: US$180.80
QF Y: US$69

These was no QF J award seat that I could compare to, but that does seem like a fuel surcharge in there...

So the BA sums seem to add up, but not the QF ones... Of course the cynic might say that now BA and AA are "closely co-operating", they may have standardised fuel surcharges on redemptions on BA flights....

Just figured that this was probably the reason, after belatedly reading my AA newsletter re the merger/linkup. Guess it means that QF & CX will now be my preferred redemption airlines (CX was always my fave, but I prefer BA over QF)
