Does anyone have any idea what QF780 is doing tonight?

Ah... fleet maintenance!

Lack of ... is the gift that keeps giving.

And before someone asks when would CASA ground the fleet ... Easter, of course! 😈

That's quite a leap, and has zero to do with ongoing maintenance. It's actually a pretty simple installation, so I guess they simply don't have a spare. And you can't have spares for every single component all of the time. But then you knew that before you commented. It wouldn't be an issue at all if Adelaide weren't closing its runways. Probably for maintenance.

Yep, resurfacing the main runway and taxiways plus installation of new energy efficient LED lighting. Started late last year and is scheduled for completion in late July to early August at this stage.

This may have now snowballed to a 7 hour delay to QF42

But if they don’t have the spare parts, how was VH-EBB able to do QF41 and QF42 from and to Jakarta yesterday/today? Are there sufficient suitable diversion points between leaving the Australian East Coast and arriving in Jakarta?

Because it may have been fixed?

Actually, yes. The challenge comes in when one of them is not available while being limited to 60 minutes. If Adelaide, Alice Springs, Darwin, Broome and Denpasar are available, then 60 minute EDTO limitation is fine.

I never realised Broome and Denpasar are so close, I get Denpasar and Jakarta.

Well, I would probably still prefer not to be on that plane or not know about its restrictions 🙈

They're not that close. Technically, two EDTO 60 diversion points can be 120 minutes from each other.

You've probably flown on aircraft with an unserviceable APU more times than you could count.

And they aren't the only airports in Indonesia that you can use. It's quite easy in that part of the world. I recall modifying a 767 route (between Singapore and Perth) in flight, to keep within the 60 minutes, and it didn't take much of a deviation.

Well, you know those people who are always telling us that XYZ airline is never delayed...heavy use of MELs is how they do it. It's a very rare aircraft that has none. Most have two or three, even brand new ones. It's just rare that the passengers find out (or have any need to).

Worth noting too, that MELs can be location specific. For instance two identical aircraft in Sydney, one belonging to QF and the other SQ. With the same fault, SQ may be able to apply an MEL, whilst QF might not. The opposite might happen in Singapore. But then in London, both might be allowed to apply it.

Looks like EBB still has the issue, QF 655, will be landing nearly 4 hours late into PER after the scenic route via mount isa
ADL has been opened up again for freighters since this morning but obviously still not a option for passenger flights

What logic is behind that if you look at an emergency? do they need less fire engines for a freighter than for a passenger plane for instance?

EBB on a peculiar (to my untrained eye) job as QF51D this morning out of BNE, leaving two hours early?

QF51D rather than QF51 since it's flying a day late. Not that peculiar, EBA, EBB, EBD, EBK & EBL have all appeared on QF51 this month, some quite frequently.

The 20/02 QF51 operated and left only 30 minutes late, so it's odd that the 21/02 flight was QF51D and leaving two hours earlier than SDT.

FR has it recorded funny, its a delayed flight for 21/02 departing 22/02 . On 21/02 VH-EBB did MEL - SIN

FR24 lists flights in order of scheduled departure time, not actual departure time. This isn't quite as clear on the mobile version.

It means that the order of flights can get a bit confusing when delays happen.
The delayed QF51 is listed as 21st, even though it departed 22nd

Yeh it took me a moment to piece this together. And on the listing nowhere does it say departed 22 Feb and given that 10:35 STD is ahead of 12:10 STD it gets listed before the actual flight it did on 21 Feb.
