Do they always charge for 2 year olds?

Hello,

Got some mates from regional WA who were on holidays over east and got stuck due to Covid for the last 3 months :( During this time they had a toddler turn 2. Flight prices are now double the price of the tickets they had to return previously (adding in the extra ticket for a 2YO thats 3x as much as they expected!!).
Is anyone aware of either of the airlines being a bit flexible with toddler ages on compassionate grounds?

Cheers

Leave them as a two year old for a little longer ;) if they don’t mind them on their lap (let’s face it the flight will be empty regardless)

they do ask for DOB on the booking although true they may have no way to check that. Dont u get kids on a flight with a medicare card? ;)

How do they check a toddlers DOB? I wonder what the possible penalty is for putting a different DOB? Surely this must happen a lot for kids that just turned 2?

they don't for domestic flights, the reality is you don't even need to see someone throughout the entire check in process either... it happens more often than you would think

and what do they do if they catch people? Are we talking like they make you pay for the ticket or try to get you charged by the police?

It is a potentially a crime if you knowingly do it - ie theft. So the police could be involved. Would they call them? I don't know the answer to that. Perhaps they would give you the option to pay first. (There would be people who do not know the rules.)
