It is my understanding that FF status points are fixed - for example, the number of points for a SYD-MEL trip in a certain class are fixed, no matter what time of day, as long as the destination and cabin code doesn't change. So, SYD-MEL discount economy would be x points, no matter what time of day the flight leaves.

A friend told me that they were looking for flights and found that different flights in discount economy showed different status points...an this be right?

Are you talking about status credits or frequent flyer points? Very different things.

Status credits are based on the distance flown, class of travel and type of ticket. They are fixed according to these criteria.

Frequent flyer points use the same criteria plus you get bonus points according to your status.

You get SCs and FFPs for each flight.

Yes, the number of Status Credits is fixed, as you say. It does not vary by time of day

SC - I understand the difference, that is why I was surprised. He suggested that an economy flight to Hamilton Island, normally 30SC, was instead going to earn him 50SC because of the time of the flight...just seemed wrong...?

MEL-HTI: (one way)
15 SCs in Discount Y
30 SCs in Flexible Y.

So depending on the fare bucket chosen there will be a difference in SC earn.

That is what I understand, but he said that Flexible Y showed different SC for different flight times...which still seems wrong.

If it is shown in his booking confirmation, can Qantas still say it was a mistake and refuse to award the points?

Your friend is comparing status credits on the the direct flight to one with a connecting flight via SYD.
MEL-HTI direct is 15/30sc for disc/flex Y.
MEL-xSYD-HTI is 25/50sc for disc/flex Y.
