Do cabin crew actually taste the meals they recommend?

I often see Trip Reports where cabin crew in J and F recommend a particular dish as it is 'very good'. How do they know this? Do they sample dishes on the ground before the come online for pax?

Do they eat leftovers? Are they just lying when they say a particular dish is very good because they've run out of the other dishes and want the pax to choose what they can't get rid of?

I think you are being unkind. The menu doesn't change every day, so if they are really saying a particular selection is 'very good', it could well be on the basis of what people have said on previous flights / days. I have had some very nice and dare I say delicious airline meals in J and F :) - on Qantas, SQ CX and EK in particular ... and I usually say so when this occurs.

And I'm pretty sure the crew do eat the same meals at the times they are allowed to eat, so they could then be expressing a personal experience view.

But I'm not so naïve to think that they would never gently nudge certain selections based on what they know will be an uneven demand, in anticipation of 'unavailability' amongst the last to be served. And I'm OK with that; either a nudge at the earlier servings or a 'tough luck, that's all we have' at the end of the service.

A friend on mine is a qf flight attendant, works mainly in the F galley, and he has talked a couple of times about days where he has been able to sample the changes to the menu and also the wines on board. I think qf are pretty thorough internationally in doing this... But I guess it can still be down to personal taste. I've also flown in j on a hkg to Mel flight in the days when qf30 was a 744 service (and during the Icelandic volcano eruption) when I was 1 of 3 in the lower deck and the bored FAs gave me a tasting of every wine in j and f they had on board. Such fun, but I needed special assistance to get off the flight in Mel!

I tell them when its something good or spectacularly awful - especially in J class - I guess they listen to the complaints/compliments?
