Morning AFF'ers, today is the day. After much good advice on these pages today I'm setting forth on my first domestic SC run. BNE-MEL-PER-KTA-PER-BNE here we go..spurred along by a dbl offer :)

How about a trip report to let us all know how it went. I'm doing mine week after next.

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

What results did you get? I went with Ibis purely for the Accor points. Keep your lounge expectations low for the KTA regional lounge and you'll judge it as cosy and adequate.

At first it looked like I had the choice of the Comfort Inn for $300 or sleeping in a rental car, but then I found the Ibis too - although no Accor points, gave up the membership a while ago as wasn't seeing the value and haven't joined the free Le Club. $219 - couldn't get a better rate and for three dollars more, I could be staying at the Sydney Hilton on the same night!

Ah well, it's a relatively small price to pay for another year of WP and if some rumblings are right, the game is about to be up on cheap status runs.

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Will be happy to share notes. It'll be five flights in 21hrs round-trip. When booking I couldn't get the extra hop (via Syd or Mel) when returning from Per.

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Off to my DSC run tomorrow MEL - ADL - PER (couching overnight) - ADL - MEL :)

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Does anybody have good ideas for a US SC run.
I'm coming from LAX and want to go to MIA and NYC (whether its EWR/JFK/LGA I'm not fussed).

So far best I could come up with is LAX-MIA-BGI-JFK-MIA-LAX for about US$1,470 and 490 SCs (when adjusted for the BGI legs in J).

BGI is coming up better for me than the much-lauded SJU and I'm not sure why.

Any ideas on how I could maximise the SC:dollar earn ?

Without looking for possibilities I would definitely be trying to go BGI-xMIA-JFK or similar as you only get J Class in and out of the Caribbean. The shorter those legs the better.

Search for YUPP or KUPP and you should get some ideas for some sub $3/SC runs. With some random searches I have managed $1.50/SC, although I have not booked them they are out there.

Thanks. I'm getting a touch better now.
670SCs for $1826 now going through SEA before heading to the East Coast.

Last year I flew from a friend's place in SEA to BGI and managed to fly in-transit via SFO-MIA....you may be able to do that if you're stopping in SEA. At the time it was 320 SC for US$736 and a trip I had to do anyway.

Cheers for the idea.

That's not too shabby at $2.30/SC.
Does anyone know how to book KUPPs on Multicity itineraries ?

Or do I have to book each leg separately ?

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Just out of interest how long did you stay in BGI and what did you get upto ?
I'm thinking maybe 1 night or 2.
Is there much to do over there ?

I have been a number of times and had 3 stays on my last trip. I was there for the West Indies v Aus Test. It's a lovely island although a bit touristy compared with others. It's easy to get around by local bus if you choose. Like most places over there it's pretty pricey but a strong A$ helps. Definitely worth a couple of nights stay. PM me if you want to know more.

Another route that I did on that same trip was PAP-xMIA (overnight) -xORD-SEA. That was 300 SC for US$661.

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Considering a Y to either HNL or LAX then JFK/YVR back to OZ, what would be best status points yield in routing?.

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Not a status run as such, but I had to fly last minute on a 3K flight, where the max bundle was only $30aud more than the plus bundle. (Yes, it's a very expensive ticket). But I get an extra 20 SCs for it, which makes it $1.50 per SC (vs if I didn't pay for it). I also had an exit row seat as well. It's always good to keep an eye out for something, I suppose.

There is a limit to multi city flights you can book online with AA. Often permitted routing from A to Z via B, C, D, E, F...etc will need to be booked via a travel agent.

I just booked a 9 leg YUPP via a travel agent. I managed to get it in around $1.85 per SC, but 2 of those legs blew the cost out. Without two of them, it would have been around $1.65 per SC. This was not actually optimised either. If I had more time in the USA, I could have actually gotten the cost down to around $1.00 per SC, and there was actually scope to drop this below $1 (although with the overnighters required in certain ports, the cost of accommodation would have mitigated any cost saving).

You have to factor in overnighters in to the equation on a pure status run. My booked trip is for my partner and I based on where we need to be, and taking a few days of relax time in the Caribbean as well ;)

Fortunately I have a great friend who is also my travel agent (in that order). I do the research and grab the fare construction from places like ITA, and then email them through to get it booked. There is a small booking fee I have to pay as they can't issue AA tickets directly, but for around $20 I'm quite happy to pay that.

Let's see if Doug Parker screws it up later in the year. I'm willing to bet these could well dry up :(

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Been HDBU since doing the SYD-TSV SR and only just checked my FF a/c this morning: Gold!
First time for me so Thank You to everyone here.
The Double SC promo points all posted correctly within 4 days of the flights, FF points & SCs within 24 hrs.
Even got a PS 'shadow' :p for the Y flight SYD-PVG! That really was a bonus!

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Ticked over to SG after DSC posted this morning. All the exit row seats. Damn! Awesome feeling!

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

You know, I'd decided to give up the status chase game after a KUPP disaster. Then the DSC comes along. Arrgh!

Need another 690 SC by May 31 for WP, but that's probably not worth it at this stage; in any case, I can't really find a BNE-KTA run that would fit (I have a rather important exam on the 24th May which I should be studying for!). Up for any bright ideas on the weekend of the 25/26th though .... I'll need to celebrate or drown my sorrows!

But I could do the run on the 22nd of June and get a headstart on next year. Hmmmmm .....
