Hi all,

Have a member in family with 500K+ points....now if they suddenly die are the points gone?
Can the points be transferred to another family member, to be used?
Any details on that ie. by when, how...blah blah blah
Is there Family account like Virgin has?

Could not find it in QFF program site and search on here did not reveal?

Don't report it to Qantas, keeps the account active and do transfers every year or use the points.

I think there is a thread about this somewhere already?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

As mentioned notification of the death triggers closure of the account. I plan to also have specific instructions before my death for family members to use my points. ie buy a flight from X to Y for yourself. Just a figurative measure to support the points being used before I went.

So the answer is book flight for family members to use up points and then once trips completed. Notify them of death.
Can Qantas be alerted other than from family member of death?

Yes, death of a person extinguishes their privacy rights, another recent thread gave an example where the employer notified Qantas.

There is no reason to tell Qantas about their death!

Oh and sorry to hear about the death too!

I don't think death extinguishes your privacy rights, but it's probably somewhere in the terms and conditions that you agreed to Qantas being notified of your death. On a more practical aspect, if you wanted to make use of your recently deceased relative's points how would you gain access to them if you didn't know their pin code?

It does under the federal privacy act for which coverage is applicable to Qantas, state laws may be more applicable but the law is a messy patchwork in that respect:

The Privacy Act regulates the handling of personal information about individuals. Section 6 of the Act defines an individual as ‘a natural person’. The Privacy Act does not cover genetic information about deceased persons. An individual may only make a complaint under the Privacy Act in relation to an interference to his or her own privacy.
