What's the difference between a date change and a itinerary change?

Suppose I had a flight booked PER SIN return. If I want to change the return date or the departure date, is that a date change or an itinerary change? It would appear below that date changes are free???

From QF website:

Before and after departure:
  • Date changes permitted.
  • Itinerary changes permitted. At the time of making the change, you must pay (per person per change):
    • an itinerary change fee of A$100
    • any fare difference
    • no telephone service fee applies for time or date changes
    • a telephone service fee of A$75 applies for all other itinerary changes
No telephone service fee applies for time or date changes.
A telephone service fee of A$75 applies for all other itinerary changes.

Or do you still have to pay the $100????

It really depends upon the fare rules; you need to know what they are. Do you have an idea of the fare code?

e.g. for QFF award bookings a Date change comes under "revalidation" which is a change to date/time of a flight between ports without changing Class of travel, Origin, Destination, carrier. For PS/NB in these cases a 2,500 QFF point fee per person is charged.

The synopsis you quote of the Fare Rules as supplied by Qantas indicates a $100 fee may be payable.

The itinerary is changed if the airport codes are changed. Such a change always requires the ticket to be re-issued (or cancelled and rebooked depending on fare rules). This is also known as a routing change.

If the airport codes remain the same and only the date or time or flight number changes, then a ticket generally does not need to be re-issued. This would be a date change. Some tickets permit date/time/flight changes under certain conditions. Some will allow a different carrier to be used so long as the routing remains the same.

Well it was booked as class V (Red-e-deal)

My interpretation is that changing the return date is just a date change. I'm not changing the airport code etc..

What do you guys think?

That would be a date change. Of course you can only change to a flight that has V class available, otherwise you will need to pay the difference to get to the higher fare class that is available.

You may have to pay the $75 telephone fee if you cannot change it on-line.

My interpretation of the example above is that date/time changes where there is no change to booking class or city are actioned for free. Booking class and/or City code changes are itinerary changes and as such incur the $100 penalty AND the $75 telephone service fee. SO the fee to be paid will depend upon availability, seasonality etc.

I just changed the date of a US domestic flight booked via QF and had to pay USD100 since the ticket had to be re-issued :(

That is the the standard fee that AA charges for changes to most of their domestic cheap economy fares
