Tiger Airways (SQ's equivalent of Jetstar) have announced that they will be flying between Singapore and Darwin (subject to government approval).

As an opening special, you can currently book fares from Darwin to SIN for $210 return including taxes and surcharges, just a little cheaper than the $1000 return offered by Qantas.

If one were inclined, this could be pieced together with DJ specials from to DRW to get from Brisbane to Singapore return for $468, or from MEL to Singapore for $508 (or even better go one way on the LCC'sand get a $500 return on QF from SIN to Australia)

That is very cheap!

Any mention of what the actual fare will be after the opening special offer is over?

As soon as I saw the price I knew there was no way that was a Qantas fare. Be interesting to see if and how they respond. The Qantas fare really is a joke.

Yeah, with their current 85 b'day sale, at $1000 it is actually ~$5 cheaper to purchase a BNE/MEL return to SIN and ADL/SYD are only ~$10 more expensive.

The Asian LCC (Tiger, Air Asia etc) have amazingly cheap everyday fares. I wouldn't be supprised if the Tiger fare is less than $150 each way. Interesting to see how it goes, ValueAir tried it for SIN-PER, but didn't last.

Booked this (DRW-SIN-DRW) recently for March 06. There was a "special" at SGD 39.98 each way which I collared. However, with taxes, it came to approx AUD 200 round trip (shock, horror).

To get to DRW from SYD, I redeemed a QF FF ("free") ticket, where the "taxes" were approx AUD 240. Go figure...

By the way, I have flown TR many times and they are an excellent airline (the SQ parentage shows through). Better than one could say for JQ...

:)

Are the taxes one way or SYD-DRW-SYD?

I booked, and paid for, a flight SYD-ADL-DRW in April and the flight cost $366 with the taxes and charges portion $114. This is to connect to my DRW-SIN-SYD award flight which had taxes and charges of $257.

Hi John,
My routing on my QF FF ticket was CBR-MEL-ADL-DRW-ASP-MEL-CBR (no SYD, which probably explains the lower taxes, etc).

However, with the current DJ and QF fare sales, I decided to cancel my "free" ticket on QF and have 31,000 FF points recredited to my account. I then booked CBR-BNE-DRW-BNE-CBR on DJ for $404 (including all taxes, etc). You could do it for the same ex SYD.

I thought this was a much better deal (ie 31,000 points for $164).

:)

That sounds like a good deal. CBR-DRW return for just over $400. If I did the direct flight SYD-DRW on QF (which was totally incovenient) it would have been ~$290 one way.

I wanted to go thorugh Darwin to get to Singapore and couldn't get SYD-DRW-SIN on the day I wanted. That is why I paid to go SYD-ADL-DRW and start award DRW-SIN from there. Either way we can't win when redeeming "free flights". As most people on this site say, burn your points on upgrades to business class.

My problem, John, is that I tend not to fly Qantas (other than on award tickets earned through credit cards), so upgrades are not an option for me.

On the issue of cheap fares, you might be interested to know that Tiger Airways is currently having a "75% off" fare sale, and I bought a SIN-DRW one-way fare for May for approx AUD70 (incl all taxes). Just check their website www.tigerairways.com.

That is totally understandable. You have good status with *alliance and continue to fly with them. I only want to fly 1world to be able to achieve a decent status one day, like lifetime silver or even lifetime gold.

For me tiger airways is too much of a LCC. Great price if LCC doesn't bother you. How much for QF SIN-DRW one-way?

Wow! How did you manage to get it that low? The best fare I saw was $11.25 from DRW-SIN (on 28th Feb if anyone's interested) and with the additional taxes that ticket and every other ticket I tried went over the $70 you mentioned. I'm really curious now...

Try using the "Visa Discount" link at the bottom of the page.

I used 1 April for my example.

Departure (Lowest Fare)
1 Adult at 46.25 SGD 46.25 SGD
Taxes and Fees (details) 47.25 SGD

Total: $SG93.50 = ~$AU76

Darwin-SIN is a different matter. There are lots of taxes that way, and it does push the price up.

Ah. Bugger. So it is. I'd been looking at return flight arrangements initially and just halving the total cost. Then, even when I went to look at one-way fares to see if it made a difference I was always looking at going from Darwin - Singapore not the other way around. Should have read your post more closely since I was trying to replicate the costing you'd received. I'll go in the corner and wear the pointy hat for a while.

Actually, clifford did the original fare finding. I just replicated it!

Didn't I mention the pointy hat?

You might be interested to know that Tiger currently has an even bigger and better fare sale.

SGD 9.98 + taxes for SIN-DRW (works out to about AUD 50). Same fare to other places too (I just booked a BKK-SIN flight for about AUD 40 incl taxes).

Hard to beat!

A nice way to get an extremely cheap holiday in coughet (assuming the 0.01 bhat rooms are honoured).
