Vintages can vary store by store. Way back when I was interested enough I obtained the phone numbers of the two nearest stores and phoned when I was interested enough. For delivery the stock can come from many possible stores/warehouses, it's impossible to check vintages unless specifically listed in the offer title. Then you can send it back if the deliver a vintage you don't want. But it's mostly marketplace listings that include specific vintages. Actually, if you don't like the vintage supplied you can probably return it under the Change of mind policy.

The problem is that barcodes identifying the product do not include vintage, so no, they don't know what vintage is in stock at each store, apart from the back vintage cellar selection where they print and apply an extra barcode to identify it.
The only way for the chains to solve the problem would be to have online orders delivered from warehouses that can accurately track vintages and probably requires a sub-site for such orders guaranteeing vintage.

But the cost would outweigh the extra sales from a diminishing population of wine drinkers that strongly care about this.

DM have huge stocks of back vintage wines floating around in stores. In recent orders I've had Stonier Pinot Noir 2021 delivered (current is 2025), Stonier Reserve Pinot 2022/2023 (current also 2025), Teusner Righteous FG Shiraz 2017/2018 (2021/2022 current). Only bought these because of the reduced prices and discount codes, and will keep them.

You have to speak to the bot and after they have NFI you have to wait until you get connected to a human and then wait in a queue

Yeah, they don't publish direct store numbers. Once you get through to a human you have to ask them to call the store, and sometimes they can't be bothered as it involves work and takes time. But usually within 1 or 2 agents you can get them to make the call. Stock check of shelf generally the only way to know a vintage. Only works for click and collect.
