Given the bankruptcy proceedings currently happening, I can understand why some may be reluctant to buy from Grays. But I thought it worthwhile reporting on some of the purchases that I’ve recently made via auction.

Each of the following seems to come from a regular 3 day sale titled something like “No Reserve Fine Wine :: Feat. Elderton” The current sale is here: No Reserve Fine Wine :: Feat. Levantine Hill

Items are eclectic to say the least. Not sure if they are from someone’s personal collection/a deceased estate or just Grays aggregating their sales. But unusual items/lot sizes.

The following takes into account the prices I paid for items over the past month from Grays, including all of the postage charges/Grays fees/credit card surcharges etc:

1) Elderton GSM 2022. $16 a bottle in a 4 bottle buy.

2) Reynell Basket Press Merlot 1994. $12 a bottle in a 6 bottle buy.

3) Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. $42 a bottle in a 6 bottle buy.

4) Hardys Tintara Cellars Shiraz 1998. $22 a bottle in a 2 bottle buy.

5) Leasingham Sparkling Shiraz 1991. $24 a bottle in a 3 bottle buy.

6) Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 x 1 and Parsons Paddock Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 x 1 for $17.

7) 2012 Rutherglen Estate Reserve Shiraz x 1, 2007 Rutherglen Durif x 1, 2006 Richelieu Charles Melton Cab Sav Shiraz x 1, 2006 Mc Williams “1877” Cab Sav Shiraz x 1 for $55.

8) Elderton Merlot 2018. $16 a bottle in a 4 bottle buy.

9) Spinifex Syrah 202 x 2, 1 x Rochford Latitude Shiraz 2021, De Bortoli La Boheme Syrah Gamay 2022 x 1, Gemtree Bloodstone Shiraz 2019 x 1, Tar & Roses Shiraz 2019 x 1 for $78.

10) Mixed Plantagenet Red Wine Pack (3x 750mL). Item Includes: 1x Three Lions Cabernet Merlot 2014, 2x Shiraz 2005 for $48.

Some of the items even came with Christmas gift labels which were from the 1990's!

Storgage/age is an issue and an unknown. But the prices and variety available make it a worthwhile risk for me to purchase over 100 bottles so far.

I’ve bought plenty of genuinely great wines off grays, but I did notice the other week one that I was eyeing seemed a little off. My guess is that it’s a fake but spose could be a generic photo and not the actual wine you’re buying but was enough to make me second guess bidding.
Wrong bottle, wrong closure from what I could tell for the 2016 Command.

I've noticed quite a few errors on Gray's such as description not matching the title (wrong size or number of bottles) or wrong image used. Also, apparently Absolut Vodka is apparently made in Russia now.

Not sure who writes these but attention to detail is not their strong suite so need to pay attention.

I've also made a lot of great purchases from Gray's but they don't take any accountability for corked or otherwise damaged wines so you win some you lose some. A few have gone straight down the sink unfortunately.
