Thanks serfty

Booking AA flights direct with AA, however, so will be be on separate itineraries with connection time of 55 minutes?

I assume QF will tag luggage through to BNA?

oneworld - AA.com Separate Tickets

AA would protect on separate tickets as part of policy, but generally only if the connection meets MCT.

55 minutes as not long enough ... the BNA flight would start boarding just before 3pm.

My experience connecting to JFK is that you may make the flight, but your baggage may not. In that case you'd be waiting for the later flight anyway.

agreed - that's aggressive, even if there's no line at immigration, in my experience (n=less than 5! but on QF7) you still end up waiting for 5-10 minutes for the bags to start coming off the carousel, then have to clear customs, drop the bags, and join the fun queue of security screening. and that's before you may need to transit terminals.

Seems the later flight is the only real option.

Is possible to move to an earlier flight at the bag re- drop point if you have a ticket that allows same day changes? Lets say for example, the 14.20 DFW - BNA flight is delayed by 1 hour to 15.20 and I'm at the bag drop at 14.10?

yes - my partner was able to move to an earlier flight than she booked last month. don't drop your bags off - go to the service desk instead and they'll be able to sort you out.

I agree with the comment not to drop your bags off. Last time I did that on a connection to Chicago they were sent by AA to China instead. Didn't see the bags again until I was ready to board for my return trip to Sydney 3 weeks later!

Are you suggesting that it is better not to try and check bags all the way through when I check in at SYD with Qantas? I took the later connection so now have three hours between arriving and departing DFW. I have never transited there intl - dom but assume it is like LAX, where you clear customs and then deposit your checked bags at a counter near the customs hall?

Yes do the drop off.I have checked bags with QF NRT-SYD-BNE and QF sent them to PER.These things happen.
On this last trip we did NRT-DFW-LGA on AA.Our DFW-LGA flight was cancelled and all the directs full.We went via RDU whilst our bags went direct and were waiting for us at LGA so no wait at the carousel.

Have them checked through so they follow your original routing regardless of what happens.

However, after you collect your luggage off the carousel and proceed through customs, you'll immediately see the drop off point. Right next to this area is a bank of monitors showing all other flights out of DFW. If you see an opportunity to be on an earlier flight, take your luggage and continue
ahead to the check in counters where you may get new boarding passes and have your bags retagged.

If they is no opportunity, just drop your bags off with their original tags and proceed to return to the terminal via security.

If you can check your bags through I'd do that. But my understanding and experience is that you have to clear customs and immigration at your first port of call in the US. That means you'll be collecting your bags. At that point I would not just drop them. I'd take them to the service desk. 55 minutes between flights was never going to be sufficient. US immigration is very slow. But 3 hrs will give you plenty of time to relax and have a shower after the very long trip to get there.

Have a connection at DFW,
coming in from New Orleans on QF4828 (AA1585) arriving DFW at 1950, flying out to SYD on QF8 departing at 2115,
is the MCT 85 mins domestic to international as well? would my check luggage make the connection?

I would have left 2 hrs, just to allow for a potential delay on the domestic leg, but you'll probably be fine.
