Cathay Pacific has banned an influencer that tried to demand a free upgrade, by showing a fake email at check-in from somebody at CX that supposedly promised her one.

Passenger Banned From Cathay Pacific For Trying to Trick Staff Into a Business Class Upgrade
by Gary Leff on September 25, 2019

Self-described “social Influencer” Jacqueline Ng says she “filled out an online form. I emailed Cathay Pacific to try and upgrade to business class.”
She says she got an email back offering an upgrade subject to availability – telling her, “Because of your social network, we would like to formally extend a Business Class upgrade to you on the day of your flight, should any tickets still be available at check-in.”

She showed the e-mail at check-in in Taipei before her first flight. She was flying paid premium economy, via Hong Kong, to New York. The agent declined the upgrade, and she flew premium economy.
She went to the airport for her return flight. At the check-in desk she showed the email again saying that she could be upgraded. Things didn’t go well for her.

  • The agent called over a supervisor. Everyone went away and returned back “30 minutes later” with a letter saying she wouldn’t be flying.

  • Cathay Pacific had determined that the ‘sure we’ll upgrade you’ e-mail was fake, and they were cancelling her ticket due to fraud and banning her from the airline.

Didnt Cathay know.....

On another thread I was reading how school teachers are reporting children as young as 10 are already aspiring to become influencers. How can we encourage kids to study hard and get a real job, when all they really need to do is master the art of selfies?

Nb. I am a bit jealous, as my arms are too short to take a decent selfie

Couldn't happen to a more appropriate person. Doubling down also failed spectacularly. Wonder what she'll do now that her "social influencer" days are surely numbered. Yes, get a real job!

Sadly, there'll be barely a hiccup. Remember Kate Moss? Nothing she ever did damaged her career!

The only people who will add themselves to her Insta followers are similarly vapid people with no idea about reality (unless it's a show)...

I was watching a Insta'rant yesterday where someone was complaining about how the algorithm being changed was messing with his livelihood and mental health. This guy literally makes clips of himself being loud and annoying in public (shouting, singing and scaring people).

I also recall people phoning the police when Instagram went down a year or so ago. 😳

  • Agree
Reactions: ALH
influencer=entitled, unskilled, talentless, lazy, wannabe
people who are blinded by the glitz and glamour of doing what rich people do without having any skills/talent/hard work/finances to do it

below second hard car salesman in my eyes

Coupled with a strong ego and inflated sense of self importance.

Which actually makes them perfect fodder for (sur)reality Television ..... don't lazy networks just go straight to these sorts of people to populate their latest "I'm dating my sister's husband" type (sur)reality TV show? Perfect to play the roles they are assigned by the producers, without having to try and weed out boring every-day folk.

yep, its easy to become 'influenced' and convinced and entitled to an easy glamourous life, when you see in the news all the time some (usually female) with fake chest, bleached smile, without a care i n the world in maldives or bali , living like a king, and behaving liek the wrold owes them something!
