Which is why I don't ever fly AA - once in AA from CDG-JFK and I had to pay US$5 or Euro $5 for a miniscule bottle of wine - and they didnt have change for a US$20 note - note this was during the Athens Olympics 2004 - My one and only time with AA and only becasue a friend bought me a fare to NYC after showing hime around Athens for the Olympics
BTW UA p.s. is ONLY California/NYC
Maybe I have completely misread the USA and where the powers reside. My apologies for having done so

So on the basis of having one flight and having to pay for wine you dismiss the entire airline?

No paying for the drink was OK (but Im not used to having to pay for drinks onboard anyway) - the fact that an American carrier with a flight to the USA didnt carry basic change in US currency, let alone in Euros
I've been a staunch supporter of the Star Alliance ever since its inception so when a friend gifted me this trip on a non-Star carrier, I was open minded.
However the entire trip experience reinforced why I'll remain with the Star Alliance, particulalry within the USA

I can think of many good reasons not to fly AA, but being charged $5 for a small bottle of wine is not one of them.

As for if the QF issues would be even known about in the US? Well maybe in LA \ NY \ DFW \ HNL as those are actual destinations served by QF, but even then I'd say it would be limited to those who actually deal with QF bookings so ground staff \ travel agents and other airline staff who either have codeshares with QF or are in direct competition with them.

AU domestic issues are rarely known outside of AU and NZ to a degree.
