Former Test opener Michael Slater has defended the shock retirement of Australia batsman Damien Martyn as a "gutsy" move but admitted it happened in bizarre circumstances.
Slater blamed media scrutiny for helping to push Martyn to the point of abruptly ending his 67-Test career.
"It was quite bizarre. I only found out at lunchtime yesterday, like all of us," Slater said Saturday on Sydney's Triple-M Radio.
