I think the Ashes series is worth its own thread here in the Playground where we can comment and discuss the highlights and lowlights (may be the same event from different perspectives) of the play.

At this moment, Punter is still there on 174 and looking strong. Great to see him leading from the front. Score is 4/423 which has set the Aussies into a position that they should not lose the match. Just hope they can capitalise on the good start and go one up in the series.

Wonder if JQ could be persuaded to change their promo so that price reflects number of runs scored off Harmison?

The front page of teh bbc website said 427/7 which go tme very excited for about 3 secs until I checked out the right information :(

I did some quick calculations last night from the last Ashes series.

The Aussies took 93 wickets compared with the Poms taking 89 wickets.

The Aussies scored 2810 runs compared with the Poms 2962 runs.

Given that the last last match was drawn with Australia at 0/4 so basically a full innings to bat, the biggest difference was England winning the toss for the last three tests, especially the last in being able to play out the draw.

Ouch, that would be a shock. But what do you expect from the BBC  .

Or the number of wides and no-balls delivered by Harmison :p .

The first test is already shaping up to be Flintoff vs. the Australians....

Mind you I have a feeling that this test could be a draw as the wicket is said to be very much a batting wicket. I do hope they dont get rain overnight tonight...

Anderson is the first Englishman to have 100 runs against his name on the scoreboard :p .

And Giles has taken 25% of the wickets so far in the series.

Well Punter is not going to be to 200 this innings. Out for 196. Great captains knock.

man the bbc site is cough and not up todate - it has him as still in!

In his innings, Ricky Ponting moved from 9th highest test runs scorer to 7th place. He passed Miandad and Gooch. So he is now at 8988 career test runs and only 61 behind Dravid.

Ooops. Gilly goes for a duck. Now its 6/467. Two quick wickets to Hoggard. Now its up to Clarke and Warnie to get past the magic 500.

Harmison gets one at last. Warnie is gone and its now 7/500. That brings in Brett Lee who has quite a good record at the Gabba.

Hoggard taken off before he got 100. Will Harmison get there?
Maybe no more will make the ton. Its 8/528 at tea with Lee and S Clarke to bat after tea. Then again, McGrath has pretty well at The Gabba before. I think Ponting will not be disappointed to have to bowl at the poms in the last session today. A little swing now evident.

Clark out for 56 in 59 minutes; anderson now has a wicket so his bowling average is 112 for the series.

... and that's an early Tea: 528 for 8
