Crew carry-on taking up PAX OHSB space

I didn't start this as a separate thread, it was split off from another thread where I made the comment in post one. The issue is an annoyance, but not one that would cause me to start a separate thread.

But it would cause me to start a separate thread - especially as it prompted thoughts back to the QF9 and AirNZ issues I experienced.

I actually think it is a relevant topic for another thread. The whole hand luggage and stowage is a constant hot topic here. It is something that raises a lot of ire and something that I think the Cabin Crew have some role in sorting out. With OLCI the first time that anyone from the airline might see the bag is at the gate. The airlines are pushing people to go HLO with baggage fees and restrictions so where things go, how they go and how we make the journey an enjoyable one for everyone is a relevant discussion. I don't pick exit rows domestically generally but I do pick bulkheads and the availability of overhead cabin space is important. I dont want to take space over someone in business who has paid double (or more) the price of my tickets. Nor do I want to push back through the crowds to retrieve my bag that has had to go further back.

I think it is reasonable to expect the cabin crew to stow luggage in places less likely to be frequented by pax - they get on first and thus have access to wherever they want and they disembark last so have speediest access to every part of the cabin storage areas.

And yes milehighclub - feel free to use whichever loos you like.

I now find locker space further forward as I am walking towards my seat and stow it there. Makes it easy to stow and easy to retrieve while moving forward on exit.

Does this include putting your bag in the J OHSB when seated in Y?

These OHSB are not personal lockers. They are Over Head Storage and that is all. The only people with any authority as far as the overhead storage is concerned is the Cabin Crew.

The bag I carry on is also only a small backpack and fits easily into small spaces. When I have a seat in front of me I store it under there.

On occasions when the space above me is taken by crew bags and there is no other space nearby I will signal to the FA, explain that the presence of crew bags means there is no more room, and proceed to ask for their assistance in finding space for my rollaboard (usually half way down the back of the plane).

Of course I'm always polite about it and only do it if I'm 100% certain the bags above me are crew bags. The QF crew bags are easy to identify.

I typically avoid making my problems someone else's problems, especially when travelling. But in this particular instance I think it's fair to handball stowage of my rollaboard to the crew.

I don't love having my rollaboard stowed a dozen rows back from where I'm sitting, and I also don't love having to wait for everyone to disembark so I can go back to get my bag. But, I also don't want to be *that* guy who can't find space for his bag.

If I have a tight connection and am keen to exit the aircraft quickly after landing I will explain this to the FAs once we're in the air and they are typically willing to help me try to swap OHSB space with a crew bag or another pax.

As usual, a bit of please and thank you can go a long way in some circumstances.

Its just poor planning and interior design on domestic aircraft that the airlines involved need their crews to swap aircraft - but can't plan a crew luggage area.

Also the false economics of checked baggage fees and the failure to enforce carry-on board limits at the gate. Imagine the labour and other costs of say 300 flights delayed by 5-10mins each while cabin crew play hand luggage tetris?

I'm a little surprised by this observation. We pay good money to travel and to carry our luggage in a convenient way. Proof of that is that airlines are so strict about checked luggage limits. True that crew have "authority" over overhead storage; as they legally have authority over every part of the aircraft, included allocated seating. But if a crew member arbitrarily took possession of an allocated seat, there would be much complaint. I therefore don't see that the notion of "authority" lends much support for the concern that crew members spread their luggage out willy nilly depriving paying customers of their amenity.

The real issue is that often times crew members -- like all of us in a way -- are too lazy to check luggage and wait for it at the other end, and so use the advantage of their pre-boarding to take up what room suits them. This is both selfish and inconsiderate. We pay good money for convenience and are entitled to it whereas crew are utilising positional power to derive theirs; if anyone should be entitled to convenience it's we who pay the bills and, I might add, the crew's salaries.

There were certainly signs in the 'J' overheads on my DJ flight yesterday.

Clearly marked 'For Business Class Passengers Only'.

Agree!!!! I don't care too much domestically but interenationally it is annoying, particularly when exit rows have no choice in stowing thier bags.

They really should have seperate stowage or don't stow them in the cabin.

I witnessed this issue on a SQ flight from Barcelona to Singapore (via Milan). I was in the J mini-cabin ( 8 seats). At Milan, there was a crew change, so I saw the cabin crew putting their carry on in the overhead compartment in the mini-cabin. This resulted in the last passsenger to arrive at the mini cabin not having any overhead storage space. I would not be happy at all if I were that passenger. His carry on was put in the nearly empty first class cabin.

What annoys me more.....FA's wearing heels/high heels (I'm a male, l don't know the correct terminology). Sneakers would be much appreciated. When relaxing/trying to sleep, you can hear/feel FA's march past you, especially in J.

I think it's unreasonable for them to be made to check in luggage. For many reasons most of which include why I don't check luggage.

Though I had what I consider the best CC I have observed on AA2434 LAX-DFW on 8/11/12.The CC had their bags in the F overheads but all F carryons were accommodated in the bins.It was a full flight and in Y the inevitable happened and they ran out of overhead space.The purser got the crew to gate check their bags and most of the excess Y items were accommodated in the F cabin.The rest of their service was great and not one complaint was heard from the crew.
