Hello I am wondering if anyone has had experience claiming through NAB Gold Travel insurance, the complementary insurance part of Gold ViSA The cover itself is generally comparable to a range of other products that are on offer. However, the terms of the $200.00 excess appear somewhat ambiguous. i.e. what constitutes an claim under an event - is it every element of medical treatment for a particular “event” –i.e. a broken leg might involve drugs, xray, plaster etc etc therefore if you pay the $200.00 excess per claim on as they've all arisen under the same event, does that mean the excess on that claim would be $600.00+??? Very unclear.

Also I'd be interested to hear if anyone has encountered problems claiming through this travel insurance (AIG/American Home Insurance underwrites)- the complementary version.

I have claimed under the purchase warranty and it was unbelievably efficient - payment in 3 days, but travel insurance seems to be one of those things, that you never want to claim on, but can be difficult to claim on - even when you do pay separately for it.

tracman,

Welcome to AFF.

For the first part of your query I suggest that you contact NAB and or the underwriter and get their answer in writing.

I cannot comment on your second question as I've had no experience with them.

Have been a gold card member with NAB for many years (was just upgraded to platinum at no extra cost ).

Our family was caught up in that Bangkok airport closure incident in Nov/Dec 2008. The flight we were scheduled to be on (from Melbourne) was one of the first to arrive in BKK after the airport re-opened, (it was closed for a week). Due to safety concerns we never took that flight.

We weren't sure if we'd be covered because we could have taken that flight at the very last minute but didn't. Most of our expenses for that 6 week holiday were pre-paid. AIG were taking advice from the federal government travel warnings, which at that time was advising people not to travel to Thailand. It was the 2nd highest alert level I think.

So AIG paid up. I'm pretty meticulous with my receipts etc. so everything was in order. AIG were very efficient. I heard there were many other insurance companies not paying up, even where people actually missed flights because they were cancelled, or got stuck in BKK. I heard the excuse they were giving was that it was classed as a civil unrest/terrorism or whatever which most policies don't cover. Many upset people over at tripadviser and other places.

I was pretty impressed with the whole process with AIG. Have never bought travel insurance for 10+ years and feel I'll never need to if that cover stays in place.

As it turned out AIG never charged us any excess, but I think that was an oversight on their part.
