The organizing committee has been publishing data on Olympics-related COVID-19 cases since July 1.

Residents of Japan got off to a very strong start by taking a 16-0 lead, but Non-residents of Japan are now staging a strong comeback, with the lead now narrowed to 32-23.

The first in the Olympic Village yesterday, two more today, including the first athletes.

US alternate gymnast tested positive yesterday. Apparently many athletes have not been vaccinated as they believe it could somehow hinder their performance.

845 for the three main neighboring prefectures

Among active Tokyo cases, "recovering at designated hotels" is at 1,785 people, "recovering at home" is at 3,622, and "awaiting guidance" at 1,128. Also 2,346 in hospital, with 60 classed as "severe". Executive summary: there's a lot of COVID-19 out there.

The population of Tokyo for the purpose of these stats is around 14 million.

Japan are due to play South Africa in the men's football at 8PM local time tonight.

Two South African players and one staffer tested positive a few days ago, and 18 members of the squad have since been designated close contacts. The players among the latter need to test negative six hours before the match in order to be allowed to play. If too many test positive, then South Africa will be unable to field the necessary squad of 13.

Probably not the correct thread for this question, but does the populace of Qld actually want the Olympics? Were they ever asked? Is it a cost they realise they'll have to pay? Or is their Premier going to pay for it from her pension?

Personally, I think they are long beyond their use by date....

As far as this resident goes, the answer is No and No.. Frightening thing is that this government is running "savings and debt" measures to cut expenditure because they can't afford to pay for health, police, education and the like - but are busy committing billions to an Olympic bid, and somehow think the costs won't blow out....

Honestly it’s been a very very muted reaction…. So much controversy over our Premier going over to party, only a couple of hundred rocked up to the ‘naming’ celebration….

The last few Olympics have been a financial disaster for countries so hopefully won’t be for us.

I get the sense people here don’t really care… yet? Maybe once the bills start rolling in they will?

There's a certain cache for being an Olympic city. Sydney and even Melbourne are still dining out on it. Hopefully they can learn from the mistakes of the last few and deliver what they promise. I reckon QLD does these events bloody well. I still remember how good Expo 88 was.

PS Living in Sydney during the lead up to 2000, with the disruption and cost, and living there for a few years afterwards - it was definitley a postive for getting infrastructure done.

Last I’d heard the covid bill was such that the Feds won’t pay it off in our children’s lifetimes. All this boondoggle means is that things that we actually need, ranging from hospitals, to schools, and roads, won’t be done. I very much doubt that there is ever any financial gain for the cities concerned….it’s all smoke and mirrors from the scammers who run the show.
