Could Concorde ever fly again?

A good article. Hard to believe it has been 10 years.

Could never figure out the pretty-much immediate retirement of the plane after the AF accident, which AFAIK was not even attributable to Concorde.
I always figured it was economic reasons but according to the article, apparently not.
I know Boeing had an SST planned back in the day (not sure it ever flew) and pretty sure Tupolev had a supersonic plane that did fly.
I agree (with some sadness) that it is extremely unlikely Concorde will ever fly again.

The Concorde was a pure jet engine and also had restrictions on its ops at supersonic speed due to the boom, so it came down to economics with the only viable route being one pretty much completely over water. The Tupolev you are thinking of is the Concordski or TU144, which ironically flew her last flights for NASA in 96/7.

When I was in Sydney tower it used to amaze me that the one plane that brought General Holmes Drive to a standstill was one that was essentially very old, the concord, and while I never got to fly her I did get the pleasure of a close up inspection at the QF jet base when I drove my Cortina onto the apron for a look, I was lucky enough to have an access all areas ASIC at that time for SYD.

Some of my Concorde memories... In the 70s I was a travel agent in the uk and could have gone on Concorde fairly cheaply but just never got around to it because I thought it would always be there and could do it later.
i remember once it landed at gatwick airport. There were no complaints about the noise until an article appeared in the local paper a few days later saying it had landed there and then the airport received numerous complaints about the noise!
by the 1980s I had moved to Perth. I remember quite a few years ago Concorde did a special round the world flight and it came to Perth and did a fly past low up the Swan River. Thousands of people lined the foreshore to watch it and it brought tears to my eyes, she was so beautiful.
in 2010 hubbie and I went to NYC and did the Intrepid tour including the Concorde. I had forgotten just small she was.

The link to the article was very interesting, I love the story about the spy plane having to move out of the way for Concorde!
 
i did the Concorde tour on the Intrepid Museum in New York last month. The interior off all the BRITISH AIRWAYS planes were refurbished following the crash in anticipation of flights resuming at a later date.

The tour guide says the sole reason Concorde is not flying now is because AIRBUS will not supply parts so the Concorde cannot get an air service certificate(can't remember the exact name of the cert).

He says British airways always intend to keep her flying.

We're in NYC later this year......is it worth doing the Intrepid? We're going to DC next and will be going to the Air & Space Museum.........thinking one might be enough:confused:

Airbus have a lot to answer for. I have also heard the Airbus reason of parts and a sudden price jack up.
 
With intrepid for an extra $20 you get a one hour tour which includes 40 mind inside the refurbished concorde. Air and space is can outside only distance view as with all their exhibition. To touch the

Wow, didn't know you could go inside. For $20 extra, I'd do it. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy centre in DC is great value too, not just to see Concorde. There is many more iconic aircraft to see.

And when I toured the Concorde on board Intrepid the tour guide told me a different story.

The extra weight of the secure coughpit door requirements was cited as the reason. So I guess it depends on what tour guide you get that day.

It is well worth it and I suggest you ask about the tour timing as soon as you enter. They do sell out quickly.

I suggest booking online before you go.

use google to find a discount code before you book and you can save a few dollars.

He did mention the cough pit door also but leaned more to Airbus being the killjoy.

im off to see Concorde at Manchester airport next month, ill try and remember to post in this thread how it was.
 
I had a private tour of a BA Concorde at LHR back in the eighties.
Unfortunately we never left the ground, but I did get to try out the Pilot's seat.

You can also walk (escorted and unescorted) though a Concorde at Seattle Boeing field Seattle at the Museum of Flight. [Lots of clear perspex to keep prying fingers at bay.]
