Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Well.. it is Trump. Remember it's entirely likely he may announce that the USA has a tremendous Covid19. Perhaps the best Covid19 you've ever seen. Certainly a better Covid19 than Italy. Just look at the numbers.. it's going to be way bigger than Italy. It would have been bigger than Italy before now if it wasn't for Obama and Hilary. They have a lot to answer for.

Until someone explains to him that the bigger numbers are in fact bad (which he's going to have a lot of problems with the concept of.. )
Here is my reply to similiar statements in the Stopping Covid thread. The NYT and Wapo are not accurate sources of information.

President Trump has just announced all European flights, except UK, banned from US for 30 days

Obviously timed for the close of markets which is the right thing.

Ban becomes effective Friday midnight - presumably allowing the late PM arrivals in to the USA then nothing else. Details still a bit sketchy

Big news, but very predictable.

I wonder why? Seems odd.

It is weird, London would be teeming with coronavirus with the amount of free movement of people from Europe and their packed mass transit systems.

But then Trump did think that if doctors gave a super strong flu shot it would stop corona so you know...... 😂

Trump did close the border quickly which was lucky, and continued to call it the Wuhan/China disease wearing gas masks into Congress etc then coming down with 'it'. No anti China politics comes into here of course. :)

I agree, that's why I think having things like Formula 1 teams arrive and race held in Australia will result in the exact opposite of what you're describing - it's just not F1, but you get my drift.

and, don't forget - the USA was the first to act on closing the border to the Chinese .... doesn't sound like the action of a country blind to the issue. Do you recall the xenophobic rubbish sent towards the USA for being the first to close the border?

A ban on travel between the UK and USA would send a nuclear bomb through the markets instead of just an earthquake.

I guess some would call it a relatively sensible middle ground between containment and reality...

I guess this incl freight too.

Friends have a "granny flat" that they rent out, the current occupant went to Hoi An in Vietnam a few days ago, arrived at her previously booked hotel to find it in lock down due to a staff member having the virus, she had great difficulty finding another hotel to take her. I believe it was 6 hours before she could find/get a room elsewhere.

I read via AP that cargo flights are specifically excluded as well (like the UK)

Once the markets process the initial panic I think it will calm down. Trade is not going to suddenly and entirely stop for a month.

When I checked yesterday London had something like 1 in 100,000 people confirmed active cases, but in relative terms is a hotspot with case numbers per head much lower in the UK as a whole. Germany had something like 1 in 50,000 people active cases, but much higher in hotspots like Nordrhein-Westphalen.

Across Schengen there were 17,000 active cases, more than China, but only about 500 cases elsewhere in Europe (admittedly not a lot of places). The UK may be lucky, but has the advantage if being further from Italy. All the countries with land borders have relatively high numbers.

How many people are going to fly from Europe to the Uk and then to America

Trump did not look comfortable during that speech

None, unless they are US Citizens or Residents. The ban is on people who have been inside the Schengen area within previous 14 days.

They'd look at citizenship of passport then go from there with their interrogation.

I wondered this too. Considering our Uni's were offering students money to get around the bans, my first thought was flying to Sydney and then LA
