If bringing in alcohol that's not available in Aus ie Myers Rum or Corona in cans do you still pay duty on them.

You have to pay duty above any concessions regardless of their availability here.

Moreover, if assessed, you are supposed to pay duty(excise) and applicable GST on the entire amount if over the concession.

Note however that with Beer this may not be that much (and they may not bother - YMMV).

Aye,

There is a duty rate per litre of alcohol you import (I thinks it's around $70 aud/litre) so a couple of liters of beer would work out quite cheap compared to a couple of liters of rum

The duty varies depending on the type of Alcohol (Beer, Wine, Spirits) and container volume.

For heavy beers, it is currently $39.01 per litre of alcohol calculated on that alcohol content over 1.15%. You then add 10% GST onto that as well as 10% of the purchase price.

<Duty Rate per litre> x (<Alcohol% over 1.15%>) x <litres> x <GST on duty> + <GST on Purchase>

So, for four litres of 5% alcohol beer purchased for $20 it currently would be:

$39.01 x ((5.00 - 1.15) / 100) x 4 x 1.1 + 0.10 x $20 [=$6.61 + $2 = $8.61]
