I discovered last night step mum has accumulated 24,000 points just from EDR. She got all excited that she *could* get a free flight but was disappointed after I told her that she still had to pay taxes etc (if classic award, didn't tell her about points plus pay). I tried to convince her to transfer the points to me so I could use them but she was adamant in keeping the points... she will most likely forget about the account in 6 months in time and the points will continue to accumulate and remain unused.

My sister is with Optus so I signed her up to QFF last night and she was happy for her payment points to automatically transfer to me *cheesy grin* (as she hardly flies and didn't really care about QFF loyalty points etc)

So I would like to know, how do you convince your family members to transfer their points to you?

I don't ask. I make sure they know enough to keep them valid and what options they have for their use. If someone is going to redeem for a voucher etc I can demonstrate to them whether or not it is good value and what options they have to get better value.

In the end it's their decision not mine.

Do you have any compromising photos?
Failing that, I can send some of the boys round for a small commission.

Shouldn't be too hard to convince them that flying is your favourite hobby.

Mum, dad and my brother have ~50,000 QFF points between them from Everyday Rewards which are mine to transfer anytime i want to help me get closer to my target of 2,000,000 QFF points. I think I have accumulated ~30,000 QFF points from Everyday Rewards. So together that is half a Oneworld award in ~3 years. Not too bad.

A horse's head in the bed should work well.

My Mum, Dad and Son all transfer their points to me - mainly because they don't know how to log into QFF or their pins. It helps that I pay for all the flying in our family unit. Now my sister has 24K points and wants to go to Tassie for a family holiday - she has already asked me to lend her some of mine - the chances of getting them back are nil as she dislikes flying and credit cards - so I am more then likely going to transfer near Christmas and kill 3 Christmas presents with the one transfer. I have a cousin who is a FIFO worker and spends his points every year on gift cards - no matter how much I show him the sums and how wasteful this is he continues to do it - but this is what works best for him and I now don't think of the wasted flights he could have used them on.

Like banging your head against a wall...

What value does she put on the points? What value do you put on them? Assuming you value them more than she does, pay her the value she ascribes to them and you 'pocket' the differential.

IMHO however, they're her points and she should do whatever she wants with them, even if that means she forgets about them for six months. Would you do the same if you discovered she has an extra bank account and felt that you could make better use of her money?

Why don't you do something constructive and educate her about how she could maximise the use of her points for her benefit?

I raided my kids account last night and withdrew 100,000 from each......will be going back tonight to get the rest:D

The MIL is sitting on 80k that I class as mine (flights and wine I paid for) will wait until she hits the 100k mark and I'll swoop on them too.

It helps when you set the account up and know the password!

My son now TX's all his points & SC to me after realising him having anything other than VA bronze is a waste of time as he cant use it anyway (He's 8)!
Shame I duped us both of his 230 SC earnt this year so far.. bugger..

Don't you worry that QF could go bust and you could lose the points? I lost all my Ansett points a long time ago and am scarred by that:)

Have you ever tried to educate someone about putting points to the best use who are not already AFF (or related travel group) members? It's pretty much impossible, since the second you put any sort of restriction on it (eg specific classes / flights / routing which get the best value) they throw their hands up in the air and say it's all too hard...

Prob is that when you show ppl the photos of you enjoying the fruits of your labour (aka the photo sitting upper deck in a skybed with drink in hand) they simply say "lucky prick" rather than learn how you turned a very small amount of points into international J...

I have a different problem. My sons have discovered the “FF” Bank of Mum!

I reported on another thread last year that the Melbourne based son was flying to Perth at the same time that the Perth based son was flying to Brisbane. Both courtesy of Mum.

You could buy him the gift cards in return for the points

Hi, appreciate your response however I won't be entering into a discussion regarding your questions.

The thread is about, how do you convince your family members to transfer their loyalty points to you.

I tried to enter into a discussion tonight on education on redeeming her points, she wasn't really interested, basically her response was "I'll ask you when I'm ready to book"...

Anyway, thank you everyone for your responses, I'm still interested in learning on how you convince your 'family' members to transfer their loyalty points to you. :)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Ain't that the truth !!

The way I figure it both my sons know our points and passwords so it generally means if QF is not available they would use my Velocity points. It is not a big problem. They do tend to go in J on the red eye to maximize their rostered days off.

Haha good one, but once you have your next points flight and she doesn't your sis might change her mind.

Matt

Uhh certainly sounds like "granny doesn't need that money in her bank, I'll take it and buy myself something pretty because she'll just waste it on catfood".

I don't steal people's points. Especially my families.
