I have been wanting to go to Brisbane and have been keeping an eye on the pricing waiting for a special, what confuses me is how Qantas don't offer a direct flight to Sydney from Townsville so it basically has to go to Brisbane then onto Sydney and they offer that flight for less then the price to Brisbane. On any given day it's $212 each way TSV-BNE but only $199 TSV-SYD? End of rant.

Trying to make sense of Qantas activities? LOL.

Hidden city ticketing, market pricing, people no showing on the second leg, it applies to many airlines - not just limited to Qantas.

The price of the TSV-BNE fare doesn't have a lot to do with the TSV-SYD price. On TSV-BNE, QF offer the convenience of a direct flight and charge a small premium accordingly. As QF don't offer a direct flight on TSV-SYD, they try a little harder to compete on price with other airlines that do offer direct flights (in a sense to compensate for the inconvenience, if that makes sense).

It's the same reason SYD-MEL-LST is sometimes cheaper than SYD-MEL.

If you believe that A to B to C should cost more than just A to B you just need to learn a hell of a lot more about the realities of airlines and airfares. :)
