Confirmed: New International Lounge for PER T3

Still a downgrade in terms of lounge quality for WP and above if they would normally fly to LHR from MEL/SYD.

QF needs enough high status travellers to choose to fly this route instead of the A380 route as it will need to fill the premium cabins as often as it can, so I think they could have done better.

Unless the route via PER is significantly cheaper than the MEL/SYD-DXB-LHR route on QF A380 I think I'll be sticking to the QF A380 route.

And given the relative numbers of seats I suspect QF would prefer that as well

Unless the flight departs from MEL Int to PER, now that would be a game changer ;)

A MEL-PER flight departing from MEL Int would be nice, yes but I do agree it seems highly unlikely.

I would still need to consider the cost versus going on the QF A380.

The new J seats vs the A380 J seats isn't enough to entice? I know which seat I'd prefer!

The source article from the AFR covers a lot of ground, but among other things is says:

The Perth-London flight will originate in the Victorian capital, where outgoing passengers will clear Australian customs and immigration and then travel in the same seat all the way to Heathrow, with exclusive access to a dedicated new transit lounge in Perth.

Other things covered in the AFR article include:

1) The new Noritake tableware, that will replace the current tableware
2) As for Newson: "more recently has been thinking about the next big refit, post-Dreamliner – that of the A380."

It is an interesting article, and but may be pay walled....

That part about customs/immigration in MEL is interesting.

Glad to see the crockery is getting a refresh. While I like the overall design (and believe a number of AFFers have sets at home) some of the pieces were a bit poor

Yes. If the MEL-PER service operates out of the international terminal hopefully that is consistent. I wonder if passengers will be able to book just the MEL-PER or PER-MEL leg? If priced reasonably it could be a nice way to visit Perth with a visit to the FLounge in MEL and perhaps the new International Lounge in Perth.

AFR magazine today has a puff piece on Qantas (noted elsewhere on AFF).

One paragraph is interesting:

"The Perth-London flight will originate in the Victorian Capital, where outgoing passengers will clear customs and immigration and then travel in the same seat all the way to Heathrow....."

So pretty much confirmed QF9/10 will be via PER, and MEL-PER leg will be "international".

Good news for F lounge fans, and really, there'd be a significant ruckus from the "QF Platinum types" (quoting TH), if there was loss of F lounge access pre-departure in MEL.

Interesting, I assumed they were using the domestic terminal in PER because the MEL-PER leg would be run as a domestic flight.

Well this suggests not, and fits with theories around QF9 switching and the LHR slot being used for the PER-LHR leg.

It also fits with needing a new QFi Lounge in PER.

I'd say its pretty close to a done deal to have QF9 MEL-PER-LHR and all via Int terminals.

Would another 787 work for MEL-DXB return (connecting to EK onward destinations) (the fifth and sixth aircraft coming early 2018 aren't slated for any routes as yet).

With virtually no BA tie-up any more, it makes QF uncompetitive for MEL pax travelling to any destination that isn't LHR.

Or maybe they'll be happy just to sell codeshare all the way from MEL on EK?

Interesting, I assumed they were using the domestic terminal in PER because the MEL-PER leg would be run as a domestic flight.

The desire to use the domestic terminal was to provide better connections between the PER-LHR flight and the Qantas domestic network. So, it was broader than the MEL-PER leg.

MEL - PER leg wouldn't be classed as a dom flight, because you would do outwards Aust immi in MEL, and people doing PER - LHR would do outwards Aust immi in PER.
If MEL - PER leg is classed as a dom flight, then all would do outwards immi at PER, but the blurb says Aust outwards immi would be done in MEL for those flying from MEL.
Having tried both the MEL QFi J and F lounges, I think the PER QFi T3 J lounge, newly done would be better than the MEL QFi J lounge.
