As a resident of Sydney I sometimes notice Con trails heading out over the Pacific heading east.

Now my elementary aeronautical education (largely acquired as a schoolboy reading Biggles novels), told me that you only get con trails from aircraft flying above 30000 feet. Could anyone here tell me where these aircraft could be going, as departures from SYD would not have reached that altitude by the time they crossed the coast, and I cant imagine any other international flight path that would be routed over Sydney.

They are quite likely Asia to NZ flights.

Great Circle Mapper

Sometimes even South West as QF94 and other transpacific flight to MEL often fly directly over Sydney.

Thanks Serfty, this forum really is a font of knowledge, and I shall sleep well tonight, reassured that they're not Heinkels!!

You can track them live on FlightRadar24, NZ to Asia flights. I saw two flights on there today going over Sydney, they were Singapore Airlines AKL-SIN and CHC-SIN.

I've been on a BNE-CBR flight which first went out to sea a bit then followed the coast down until we turned left over the top of SYD. If someone was looking up from the ground it would have looked like we'd come in from the pacific...

I think there are quite a few routes which go directly over...

I saw some contrails in Perth a few years back heading south. I could only think antartic or they were very lost.

Could of been a C2 or E2 heading to a carrier or a P3 before it went 200agl with two burners shut down.

Perth can get some good contrails when the conditions are right. You can get the middle eastern overflyers, sometimes it is Air Austral or sometimes possibly the flights heading to JHB.

Such as the nature of Perth itself, these items tend to make some form of media!

Funny story. I skydive and a few years ago I went to Sweden with some Perth skydiving friends. As a pom I'm used to seeing contrails everywhere in Europe but when I pointed them out to my Aussie friends they thought we'd never get to jump waiting for all the planes to pass ;-) I explained that as we were jumping from 14K ft we should be ok.

We also get Emirates and Etihad flights flying over, though generally they seem to be south of Perth.

Contrails from other planes while you're up in the air are pretty cool too.. Get them heaps in USA and Europe.

I was in Europe in 2010 and not a contrail to be seen. Was really good to see them gradually reappear as it meant that bloody volcano was sleeping again.

Transatlantic flights are good for contrails too. I went FRA-DFW once on a very clear morning and it was heavy traffic up there!

And of course, here in Canberra we see all the SYD-MEL flights drawing threads over our blue skies.
