Complimentary upgrade to SG - pointless

The "something" that she got was nothing.:-|

I believe that she would have been pleased if QF had waited a couple more hours and then:
- if they saw she had flown on the booked flight and achieved SG then sent out the congratulatory letter
- if they saw that she hadn't flown then sent out the complimentary upgrade letter

As it was, they sent out a meaningless letter that was neither one thing nor the other.

In this scenario they have to wait for membership periods to expire before sending a letter and card. For many people this would be a problem for example if flying to the US and needing a card to confirm status at AA lounges. I find your complaint unreasonable.

I'm not sure that I fully understand what you mean but I can confirm that the new card came with the letter before the end of the current membership year.

Fulfillment in these sorts of things is something that is pretty hard to get right 100% of the time. Personally, I prefer the Qantas system of sending things out a bit early, and occassionally get it wrong, to the Virgin review time limbo....

It means some people need their cards when travelling and if QF waited until the status period expired some members would not have their cards when required which would be a bigger problem than your scenario.

My understanding is that the system checks forward bookings when performing renewals. This may have been the cause, otherwise she may had a comp..

I'm not so sure of this, I've just been comped, but SWMBO who has the exact forward bookings was not. I'm thinking it's because I am the one who books. ???

More likely its your average SCs over the past 2-5 years.

That's possible too. I have more overall SCs during that period.

A couple of years ago I was comp'd SG on 120 SC with no forward bookings, I had been Plat for 5 years before that and flying had dropped for family reasons but my average was well over 800 a year if taken over anything from 2-5 years, I believe it's a significant factor and also a reasonable one.

I had this confirmed by someone quite senior at QF. The system looks forward 6 weeks prior to status renewal date. I received a new WP card when I had an AONE5 booked in my final month, prior to my actual departure.

Interesting. I recently got comp'ed WP on 0 SC and no forward bookings. Someone at QFF must like me

That's a pure comp as opposed to an early renewal based on forward bookings.

Never ceases to amaze me the theories some people have on some things.

I was comped Platinum twice ~8 weeks before re-assessment date in the first 2 years I had Platinum status. I don't remember the details and don't know if I had the required forward bookings in the system at the time. Forward bookings mean nothing anyway as they are easily cancellable or changed. And not everyone with enough forward bookings has been comped anyway as that would be way too simple a way to achieve status.

I attained Platinum in my own right each time and that was always the intention. I am hoping I will be comped if I ever need it.

Sorry gizzard but like most here I cannot agree with your stance on this :!:

She was comped Gold and you are not happy. This negative thinking does my head in.
The negative thinking is not so bad. What does me is the people feeling the need to attack.

FWIW, you don't always need the card to confirm status (and hence entry into lounges) - there have been numerous threads here highlighting that fact, esp in AA ones.

+ 1. Get comped, be grateful. Don't whinge because you weren't comped early enough for your liking.

I wouldn't do the kind of status run where you only fly and never leave the airport when you arrive either. At least go shopping or do something interesting at your destination.

The OP got what they wanted but still complains about it.

I wish I had such things to complain about but alas, they are more pressing than this.

Matt

I recently took up the discounted QP offer. As soon as I paid, my QFF account immediately updated to QFF Silver QP. The card / pack arrived a week or so later.

Maybe if the OP's partner had have logged in to their QFF account each day and checked they may have seen that they'd been comp'd and been able to cancel the status run? Unfair to blame Qantas if there are ways you can check yourself IMO.

We got comped this year, after we had already travelled the requalifying sc's!
Several weeks before the letter, we had lodged the QF claim for 15 missing sc's earned on JQ.
We then got comped based on our good flying record (or similar).
