Complimentary/Operational Upgrades on Oneworld flights

BA J to F SYD-SIN (at checkin) flying as QF WP. Booked as an AY ticket.

On the return (SIN-SYD) sitting in the QF SIN J lounge (pre F lounge) phone rang and it was BA asking if I would mind being upgraded to F…🤔

Not OW, but SYD+1 and I both got bumped J to F on EK flying DXB-BCN on a QF CR ticket!

Unfortunately not had the CX love since I’ve always been in J to start with (a lot of work trips using CX and more recently leisure).

Husband had a Qantas gate op up due to "operational requirements "
Few years back now . It was Sydney to Lax , he was platinum at the time .
Booked J and was upgraded to First . He was rather pleased lol

Got an op-up Y to J on my very first international flight, which ruined the back of the bus for me forever 😂 We were flying MH SYD-KUL-LHR, and check in staff at Sydney were trying to sort out a solidly overbooked Y cabin. Fortunately, Mr Champagne tastes and I were checking in with his Dad, who was a) already in J and b) I think MH Plat at that point, so we were the obvious candidates.

Going back to whY for the KUL-LHR leg sucked a lot, and after the return flight that trip I've never flown international economy again!

Recent upgrade from Y award ticket on BA from QFF for 4 of us to PE. I am Qantas Plat but my kids are all lowly Bronze

First ever complementary upgrade on any flight and has been QF plat/OWE for at least 7-8 years

Oooh I had forgotten , son and his brand new wife came on a trip with us from Sydney to Japan , they have bought economy but upon check in they had been bumped to business
They were both bronze, husband and I were both platinum but all booked on different booking numbers

I mentioned a couple of unexpected upgrades in an article I wrote a while back. CX bumped me from PE to J HKG-SYD on a cash fare after I landed in HKG, connecting from a F award from JFK. I was only PS on Qantas at the time.

Much more surprising was BA upgrading me from J to F LHR-DXB when my J fare was part of a OW RTW redemption. On reflection (and this only just occurred to me) I'd actually paid the F redemption points because the HKG-LHR leg of my RTW ticket on CX wasn't available in J, only F. So perhaps by some technicality I had sort of paid for F, despite only J awards being available on that LHR-DXB leg.
