Complimentary Gold Membership

Looks for the first time in a long time, QF are giving out random status upgrades.

Don't look the Gift fairy in the mouth. Go flying instead :D

Gold Coast FFers with VA have requested QF status matches and been knocked back. By virtue of their status they were prepared to give some business to QF, but they said no.

Here we have examples of NB flyers, with very little business to offer QF, being gifted Gold status

It is not logical

Was her QFF membership originally meant to expire on 31st Jan before this comp gold?

Is there a way of finding this out apart from looking at the Bronze card? I've had a good look but can't find the old card.

Login to the QFF account goto "Your acitivity statement' then click on Jan 2012 If you can see a record "EXPIRED STATUS CREDITS 31JAN12" then its likely it is the same date.

Yep that's exactly what it says. So it's been upgraded in line with her anniversary date.

Conversely, the cost to QF is nearly zero, with the potential of attracting more flying from those people.

Very strange and does not make sense.

Still a few more in the lounge will not hurt as so much space became available when they took away anytime access....

The less you fly the more they reward. Well done Qantas.

Indeed. And why does it affect people? It is gold, not plat so plat ducks still get their f lounge and seat selection. The j lounges (dom) remain unmolested.

The only thing I see it affecting is priority boarding but by your accounts it doesn't work anyway.

Not quite Mal!

This is Qantas not Virgin. Golds have access to row 1 of economy at T-80 hours if not already allocated.

Also their will be some burden on the lounges.

I think it devalues Gold for those people who have been loyal to Qantas. It means more competition for those seats reserved for Gold pre-selection, both at the time of booking, and at T80 and T24. Extra bodies in the lounges, for people who would not normally fly if they are only bronze - ie entry level. So people who are silver, get dudded completely and not recognised, and Gold face more competition. My Qantas Club membership is due, and I have been gold but mostly silver. My reward? I have to hand over $400 approx in three days time. Thanks Qantas! :(

Another AFFer, thewinchester also had the same. A promotion from QF upgraded him bronze to gold. Be happy

The promotion was part of buying gift vouchers, which the OP stated they haven't.

The unfortunate thing is that she's unlikely to do a lot of flying over the next 12 months, we do have a JQ flight booked in a few months and it would have been nice to use Qantas Club for that (I have an Amex Platinum Charge with Marco Polo Gold but I don't believe this will gain me entry unless I'm on a OW flight number).

The Qantas Gold membership will gain you access to the Qantas Club when flying Jetstar, plus 1 guest, so at the very least you're covered there.

Certainly does devalue it, especially for people who try to attain that level or retain that level out of their own pocket.

I care, I fly with Qantas now, but as it's my own pocket I fly discount so while I can achieve silver, gold is beyond me. But my Qantas Club payment is due tomorrow and I sure as heck would rather not pay for it.

Anytime something is given away people will be upset, you are on a hiding to nothing. QF has a double SC offer and people get upset. VA status match, BIS gold and plat get upset. VA offer return J flight to retain WP and people got upset.

To the OP, I hope you enjoy the benefit, even if you can't retain it next year.

Yep and I pay for all my flights as well. They have accumulated 3000 points in the last 12 months. That's 3 flights maximum. You can give someone chairman's lounge if they don't fly it will not impact on anyone.
