We flew to the UK (co-shared BA over and Qantas back). Our tickets were Sydney-London, London-Hong Kong-Sydney. Due to the volcano we were grounded and then put on a flight London-Sydney (missed our stop over in Hong Kong). Does anyone know if Qantas is liable for the missed stopover?

Personally cannot see why they would be, they got you home just on a different route. I presume you had no plans to stop over in Hong Kong? I presuem you agreed to accept the alternate flights back home. All you would miss is maybe a few extra points and the SC attached to the extra segment, probably not much difference depending on class of fare.

What type of compensation are you expecting? This sounds more like you need to be contacting your travel insurance company than Qantas. Their responsibility was to get you back to Sydney which it sounds like they did. If you still wanted to return via HKG you should have told them at the time of rebooking. If you accepted a return without a stopover then its too late to expect Qantas to compensate for missing the stopover.

Depends what you mean. Can you please post more specifics of the planned flights (including time between flights?)

Were you ticketed london-aus with stop in hk for flight connection, or do you mean stopover for a number of days (>24hrs)?

Either way, this would likely be a travel insurance claim, not something that qantas could be held liable for.

Did you have travel insurance?

I should have said that we would have arrived in HK early in the morning, spent the day in HK, stayed that night and left the next day.
