Commonwealth Platinum Awards - 40k Qantas Points. $10 fee.

Recently got my 40k points, several months after the account was opened. This took a lot of calls and follow ups on my end. I also got a fair bit of false information. It took a few months for the annual fee to be refunded, too. I called to cancel and they offered me 2.5k QFF points. So I took that (they say it can take 6 weeks - ie. longer than one account statement cycle?!). We'll see how long that takes...

Um....Well I applied and got the card before offer expired and asked at bank that it be put on file about the offer.
At the same time the new $250 back offer was being rolled out.

I got charged the $249 on first bill.
Second bill has $30 charged for Qantas Direct fee.
I am going to make the $500 spend before 2d Feb

Received second bill today.....
Has $498 refunded????

$248.13 spent (includes Qantas $30 direct fee)

Should I expect to get 40K in points?
Is it better to keep the $248 or go after the 40K in points aswell (As offer I clicked on link for)?

Tried to cancel this account today by email and Cth Bank refused to action my request. Have said it can only be done by visiting a branch or by phone.

So you can apply online but you can't close the account online??????

CBA can't try and convince you to stay if they allowed online cancellation. I cancelled mine over phone last week.

Have already told them I'll be contacting the FOS if they fail to accept my notice of cancellation.

Might be worth a phone call. I just called to cancel mine (as the points have finally hit my QF account) and they offered me 5,000 points to keep the card a bit longer. I've heard reports of people being offered 10k.

Apparently they will take 6 weeks to credit them after which I will be phoning back to cancel again.

Call 13 22 21, press 4, 0, 2, enter netbank code, press #, enter netbank pin, press #, tell them you want to cancel. Takes about 5 mins...

Ah, I see. That makes sense. I guess they must be hoping you'll forget to cancel and pay an annual fee or start using the card for something?

Seems like a really odd strategy for them: I was completely open about the fact that I only opened the card for the points. I've made the minimum spend only and I called to cancel the day after the original 40k points hit my account.

The card's in a drawer at home and I've set a calendar reminder to call back once the next lot of points arrive...

This is a definite mistake.

Several people I know have done this. When they next applied with the same provider for their new offering they were knocked back.

Just received my 40,000 points today (after $500 spend on 4th December). Rang to cancel and got offered the 5,000 QFF points and a free upgrade to the diamond card which earns 1.5 QFF points per $1 spend. They try pretty hard to make you stay.

I guess it's just the 6 weeks wait till those points post. Some people want to move on to other cards.

Refunded Annual fee money last bill
My points posted I noted via qantas email for wines(then checked QFF account) but not directly notified...
Now for the $30 Qantas Direct fee.....When\should that be refunded...next statement?

Not worth it for the 6 weeks wait when you can immediately go onto this new offering and get 75,000 QFF points for free!

I got 80k CBA (40k VFF) with Diamond. Fee free with mortgage. Points posted a couple of weeks ago with first statement. I'll keep this card (at least until they devalue the Amex, thanks to the RBA).
