I dont know if it was the paint fumes from the house I've been renovating, but at about 1.00pm I saw a Continental Airways plane in the sky in MEL.

Can this be true?
I've seen heaps of them while living in US, so I know what they look like, but am confused what 1 is doing down here.

Could be a few reasons. Possibly an ex continental plane and yet to be repainted....or leased to fill in while maintenance takes place. And it might be in use for a whole bunch of different airlines.

Could you make out what equipment it was? 747? 777?

Maybe it was the United Airline flight 840?

Hmm I'm trying to picture the new United colour scheeme and the Continetal scheme.....some similarities from memory.

How high was this plane and did you get a really good look? If it was a 744 then maybe it was Unitied 840 :p

It wasn’t a 747, it was a 2 engine plane. Actually it didn’t look big enough to be a 777 either . Must have been a 767 or even 737......

Definitely wasn’t a United Plane, unless they used a CO plane to SYD today as the timing seams perfect. (If it was departing)

Wish I took a picture (Was driving :( ).

The UA and CO design look a little similar, but the gold/yellow lines of the CO captured my eye. (Was nice and shinny)

Could it have been an Atlas Air cargo plane? Like continental has a globe on the tail.

Ahhhhhh, Think you might have solved the mystery.... Well kind of.

Didnt have any writing on the side (Atlas Air), but that tail looks very similar to CO... The website says they only have 747/200-400... Which it wasnt...

Hmmm......

Could be something due for a re-paint, there was some CO planes up in BNE that had been sold to somebody local i believe. (Seem to recall reading that anyway).

Wasn't an MD95/B717 was it ?

Avalon airport has aircraft in for maintainence from many places, as well as cargo aircraft. Where abouts in Melbourne were you when you saw it?

I live down at Williamstown.
I was traveling west , and the plane was going North-East.
Avalon does sound like a possibility...

Hi there

Could have been one of Continental Micronesia's 737's from Guam, not sure what it would be doing down in MEL, maybe a charter of some type, they have been in before.

Yeh, that’s what I think it must have been. Maintenance at Avalon, going up to CNS for pickup to GUM.

Was hoping somebody else saw it, as well.... Just checking my sanity... LOL
