When you make a classic reward booking (on non-QF metal) is some form of insurance included?

Not sure. Probably not, I don't think any Qantas bookings include insurance. Classic awards on Qantas aircraft include the option to pay extra for insurance.
Just try a dummy booking to see if an insurance option is offered.

It's always recommended that you travel with appropriate insurance, however it's never automatically built in to your Qantas ticket regardless of the form of payment.

Some customers opt for annual policies with their preferred provider, while others avail of insurance services via their credit cards facilities.

That said, you may use your Qantas Points towards travel insurance: https://qantas.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/596

Indirectly it *sort of* is... in that the cancellation fee is fairly reasonable (5000 points). If you cancel you'll get all your money and points back less the 5K. Some airlines will levy a hefty cancellation/redeposit fee - anywhere up to USD150.

You're also protected for missed connections (on the same ticket), and injury on board the aircraft, plus lost luggage, just as you would be for any normal paid airline ticket.

There is nothing over and above that however - nothing for medical etc that happens before or after your flight.
