Citibank Platinum International Travel Insurance

I'm trying to understand where the insurance cover begins and ends.

I've been told that one should call Citibank first before engagaing medical assistance and get an authorisation number before proceeding? Is this correct? (A bit hard to do if you've just had a heart attack and are incapable of thinking to make the call or are incapable of doing so even if one has the presence of mind under the circumstances to do so!).

While my post by no means represents what citibank or the insurer will actually do, this is my experience.

- If you're on the floor having a heart attack, you will need to call the insurer and get authorization. You can't talk and the wife calls instead? Too bad, they will only talk with the cardholder.

You either die on the floor or get a real insurance policy.

Wow this is an interesting topic.. We have always used our CC insurance for traveling but have never had to make a claim..

We are going from SYD to LAX and then driving for 4 weeks then LAX back to SYD and I was planning on using the Citibank Car insurance until I read this thread..

I have downloaded the booklet for the Citibank Plat card Zurich insurance and had a good read but maybe now I will download a 3rd party one to compare..

I called Citibank to ask them to post me a copy of the booklet so I could take it with me but no luck they said the internet is the only copy available bad service I say !
Has anyone made a claim through Citibank while away ? thanks

You will find most Oz based travel insurance policies (whether CC based or purchased) will not provide for adequate cover for rentals outside of Oz/Nz.

You generally need to either:
  • Buy a special policy before departure,
  • Use the Hiring companies insurane options or
  • Purchase an all inclusive pre-paid rental before departure.

Thanks for the reply... How about just general cover like being sick, stranded or lost of luggage. The things that could happen ?

I have now booked a car with CDW/LDW & SIP but I had to take this as a package....

thanks again for your time...
