In other words, anyone who thinks their PIN is secure and only known by them is sadly mistaken...

Logging in to the Amex website and trying to set up a pin on my Amex Qantas Ultimate card, I get the following:
We could not process your request as only Chip Cards are eligible for PIN services. Magnetic stripe Cards will NOT be impacted by the 1 August change, and you can continue to sign for your in-store purchases. You will receive a chip enabled Card by March 2015 and will be required to select a PIN during activation. Please call the Customer Service number on the back of your card or refer to FAQs for further assistance.

I expect we will get a lot of confusion from merchants as they have been told that all cards should have pins. I note, though, that my card worked recently in England without a pin, though they have already gone to a full chip-and-pin system, and check out staff were surprised and a little horrified to find that their machines would accept my card without a pin.

I think I will probably just cancel my Amex. The reward points are not as good as they used to be, and it's too hard to remember all the details to know when to use it vs my other cards. That, plus no chip and no Paypass/Paywave makes it not worthwhile.

... then you probably set it up yourself and forgot all about it. I have an additional AMEX card that I never use and my reaction receiving the letter and scratching the PIN was the same as yours, but realistically I think what happened I set my PIN when I first activated my card and then simply forgot about it :)

So here are two excerpts from emails I received in the last couple of days:
(From American Express) Important Notice: If you do not have a chip enabled card, you will not be impacted by the 1 August change, and can continue to use your Card as normal

(From Westpac) All credit and debit cards issued in Australia will require you to use a PIN to complete your transaction from August 1 2014 at the checkout/point of sale.

So, anyone know which statement is actually correct? They can't both be right. For non-chip enabled cards that is...

Maybe the Westpac email assumes that all cards will have chips by Aug 1st. I have had discussion as late as last night at Blue train in Melbourne when i was told I would need a Pin from Aug 1st. She was not going to be convinced that a card without a chip would be OK.

Well I have chip and pin Amex, visa and MC.Here at smaller businesses I usually have to sign for Amex but PIN for Visa and MC.In the UK it was PIN all the time for Amex but sign all the time for MC and Visa.

note that all Australian cards, even ones that work with PINs in Australia and that have chips, appear to be signature-only in the UK.

My Amex issued here is chip and PIN.It works with a PIN at Woollies and Coles. It was accepted everywhere in the UK with the PIN.

Samething happen to me with my Discovery Amex. It has the same pin as my ANZ card!

It depends if the issuer has programmed the PIN into the chip. AMEX and Westpac do this, others like ANZ, CBA and HSBC don't. :)

Received email from amex this morning:

Seems like they're taking their time to replace cards.
Fortunately both of mine are relatively new and have chip and pins.
Wonder when westpac will update their amexes.

Just bumping this now that the requirement for a PIN has supposedly begun. Our Westpac terminals are still allowing signatures and Westpac has advised that they won't even begin updating terminals until September. So it seems as though the widely publicised 1 August deadline may have just been part of a push to get consumers to add a PIN and not really a "hard date" as had been mooted around the traps. Meanwhile merchants that have invested in new, mobile terminals and staff training are left to do it all again in coming weeks and months when the real switch actually begins.

Yes, well let's face it, if you told everyone we won't actually cut you off how many people would have got PINs. Even with the massive advertising I'll bet there are a significant percentage who still don't have them! Would be interested to hear from a merchant on this one as to their experience over last week if any have been checking!

Amex never reissue a card number regardless of the replacement reason, you always get a new card number if you request a replacement. This is their compliance policy globally and differs from other providers I think.

I would be requesting a replacement with the reason being as damaged - that will insure the old number remains valid for DDs.
