Re: What not to do when stuck on tarmac.

The trouble with China is the spectrum of behavior is so wide, not that everyone is uncivilized. Observed in India that in many situations (unless enforced) queues don't exist. Go to China and half the people are politely waiting in a queue and the other half are thumping their fists on the desk.
I think that's the thing. China is so big and is evolving at different speeds, so you've got modern travel and wealth, yet a lot of people with medieval behaviour. In Australia we just don't have such a wide range of 'civil-ness'. India is similar, as you've got people living like Westerners and others living like peasants 1000 years ago all right next to each other.
I recall talking to an Indian friend about what I considered to be very rude behaviour with regards to queueing and waiting your turn and his response was that because there are just so many people there, if you don't push and shove you'll never get anywhere. It's probably true.

Re: What not to do when stuck on tarmac.

The Chinese need to learn to Q and not push and shove...from my experiences in Shanghai & Beijing

Flew Shanghai Airlines (subsidiary of China Eastern in September. There was someone smoking in flight. Told the crew. They couldn't have cared less.

Never again. I'll fly CX instead.

I think that maybe these anecdotes tend to highlight incidents due to the extremely large population - ie same % of idiots as any other country. We have travelled regularly in Northern china and I am surprised by some of these comments. On a recent China Eastern flight Shenyang to Shanghai I observed pax being berated for getting out of their seats while the plane was still on Tarmac. I have found it as orderly as any US flight and would certainly rate the customer service above what I have observed in the US.

Re: What not to do when stuck on tarmac.

it's the spitting on the streets that really gets me with the chinese

Or spitting on the aero bridge on the way to the plane (yep onto the carpet)... I can understand why they don't follow the normal convention of queues, but the spitting is truly unpleasant.

Re: What not to do when stuck on tarmac.

Stick to Taiwan and Hong Kong. The communist peasants are not welcome there.

Re: What not to do when stuck on tarmac.

Plenty of spitting goes on in Australian streets these days, usually by young Caucasian males. Plenty of tantrums go on in plenty of airports and flights all over the world. Personally I have seen a tantrum from an old white Australian man on a QF flight. The FAs basically ignored him.

There is bad behaviour all over the world. Not just in China. Not even especially in China.

It was the draw back and spit inside the airport that earned the only WTF in China.

Ive become less of a polite queue'er these days, Im very happy to tell people that they are pushing in front and to get to the back of the line. Politely but Im happy to be the person that points the line out to someone these days.

As far as the people on the plane trying to open the doors - these are the people I need to be with, if we are ever stuck on the tarmac for 12+hrs in Dubai :)

Re: What not to do when stuck on tarmac.

Note the men in uniform (presumably security/police/army) doing nothing... It looks like one is talking into an earpiece or mobile phone, though.

The one throwing the tanty was a government official who didn't get to the gate on time. Speaks volumes really.

Europeans struggle with the Q concept.

You certainly notice a difference between Shanghai (which itself is China's most civilised city) and Hong Kong, although that aforementioned spitting in the aerobridge was on route to QF128 in HKG.

PS: I don't wish to be too rude to the Chinese as I'm sure us Europeans behaved the same way 100ish years ago.

Absolutely, but the spitting in Aus is nowhere near the amount you'll see in China. And it'll be across all demographics be them vagrants or men in tailored suits. Snorting and spitting everywhere.

Oh OK, so he was probably a superior to those security staff and they didn't want their family home burnt down.

Really? Just stand behind the person in front of you.

There is a saying. "If you can't beat them join them!"

Waiting for a lift in BKK, HKG etc with a trolley with bags and golf clubs and when doors open I wait for those in lift to get out and those behind you rush around you at all costs to get in before you. So this happens once or twice and more people sneakily wait behind you. Next time lift arrives I push the trolley against lift doors so no one can get in and out. Those in lift manage to get out but those behind look at me as if I am the bad mannered person yet they had the intention of pushing past and didn't get their way.

I cannot tolerate poor bad mannered behaviour. Telling me this is how they grew up or that behaviour is accepted where they come from doesn't help me. I will just play their game. Sometimes it can be fun seeing them frustrated they couldn't get their way.

Yeah don't visit China. :)
I understand what you're saying and I too was initially shocked by the poor behaviour but in their defence, when you've got 1000 people inside a ticket office, there physically isn't room for a Q to form. If you want your ticket that day, you really have to get your elbows out.
It was interesting getting off a train roo as well as no one waits for you to exit before they get on (illogical I know). I was getting quite frustrated in the end so was quite aggressively putting my hip and shoulder into people if they tried to get on whilst I was getting off. I hadn't done that since I played junior footy! And the funny thing is, no one cares. You barge someone out of the way and they don't even look upset. A different society, that's for sure! I'm glad I live in Australia.

And mainland China is very different to HKG too. I guess we can thank the Brits for that.

No intention whatsoever to visit. More than enough of them making a fool of themselves. In Thailand. Someone needs to teach them general manners.
