China Airlines Delays/Cancellations

CI continues to have a relatively low profile in Oz even though it operates trans Tasman flights that can be a good alternative to the mainstream, better known carriers such as JQ, NZ, QF and VA.

On Friday 14 October CI59 from TPE to SYD is approximately 54 minutes behind time with arrival suggested as 1254. A333 B-18315 is the aircraft.

On Saturday 22 October CI51 ex TPE should arrive in SYD at about 1204, 49 minutes behind time. B-18317 is the A333.

CI has a pretty good punctuality record but that is not the case on Monday 24 October 2016 for CI57 that should arrive MEL at 1412 in lieu of 1145, 147 minutes late. The A333 is B-18353.

The 1240 hours 'tag flight' from SYD to AKL - allegedly a good alternative to the QF or VA/NZ stables, as well as EK - CI51 is still only taxiing at 1325 hours so A333 B-18317 will be at least half an hour late into NZ's largest city.

On Saturday 5 November, strong winds have affected SYD for much of the day thus far, with operations mostly restricted to a single runway - the east-west one (07/25) with departures to the west.

The 'tag light' component of C!51 from SYD to AKL is timetabled to depart at 1240. takeoff was at 1417, so arrival of A333 B-18359 should be at 1854, 64 minutes late. Hopefully it should still beat the curfew ex SYD for TPE tonight after arriving back from the NZ non-capital harbour city.

On Saturday 12 November, CI57 from TPE to MEL, the 2330 hours Friday 11 departure that was airborne at 0115, should arrive MEL at roughly 1302 hours, 72 minutes late. Aircraft is A333 B-18315. This flight then proceeds onwards to CHC - when it is punctual, a great possible alternative to EK/JQ/NZ/QF/VA especially given that CI is a full service airline and has allegedly a quite good J class - but as scheduled departure is at 1310 for the run 'across the ditch', that will turn into more like 1415 this afternoon.

Saturday 26 November sees CI57, the often punctual extension of a flight that has come in to MEL from TPE but then goes to CHC altered to depart at around 1530 hours instead of 1310. IOn consequence CI58 tonight from MEL to TPE should depart at about 0130 on Sunday 27 ('small hours') instead of 2310 this evening.

The Saturday 26 November C!53 (2325 hours from TPE down to BNE, A333 B-18360) took off on Sunday 27 at 0032. Hence it should arrive 44 minutes late at 1104 hours. At a guess, the 1225 BNE to AKl continuation should depart on time if there are no extraordinary problems detected in BNE.

CI53 is the Friday 23 December 2016 arrival in BNE ex TPE that is about 34 minutes late with expected arrival at 1054. Aircraft is B-18361, an A333.

The 2300 hours Christmas night CI51 from TPE took off basically on time at 2322; on Boxing Day, A333 B-18361 should arrive at roughly 1151, 31 minutes tardy. This flight then proceeds to AKL at a scheduled 1240 so expect that to be delayed by around 20 minutes in its pushback given a typical observed turnaround for this size of aircraft of roughly 70 minutes.

CI57 from TPE to MEL (A333 B-18357) is similarly 31 late with expected arrival as 1221 early this afternoon. This forms the 1310 hours continuation to CHC so it should also be approximately 20 minutes late in departing.

To complete a troika, CI53 from TPE to BNE should arrive 42 late at 1102. B-18317 is the A333. This aircraft is then timetabled to go on to AKL at 1225, so even with the delay this one should be able to depart on time all being well.

While none of these TransTasman flights are daily, CI gets quite good reviews these days and may be an interesting 'exotic' alternative to EK, JQ, QF or VA.

Tuesday 27 December 2016 has CI53 from TPE to BNE likely to arrive at 1056, 36 minutes late with A333 B-18311.

CI51, the scheduled 1120 hours Wednesday 28 December arrival in SYD ex TPE should instead pull in at about 1206, 46 minutes behind the eight ball. Aircraft is A333 B-18359. Its timetabled 1240 hours continuation across the ditch to AKL should therefore be able to depart at around 1320.

Thursday 29 December has CI51 again late with SYD arrival likely to be 40 minutes tardy at 1200 'high noon.' B-18356 is the A333.

As a boutique, quite well regarded TransTasman operator, CI appears to be much more punctual than the EK flights that extend to AKL or CHC.

While CI's TransTasman offerings do not operate daily, they can be an alternative to the usual suspects.

There seem however to be many delays out of TPE that translate into arrivals in Oz that are about half an hour late. On Saturday 31 December, CI57 from TPE to MEL (A333 B-18360) should arrive at about 1220, half an hour behind schedule.

On 2 January 2017, CI57 (A333 B-18360) is arriving in MEL at 1228, 38 minutes late. The next leg across to CHC should depart about half an hour late at 1340.

CI56 (A333 B-18357), the Sunday 15 January 1915 CHC - SYD took off at 2013. It should be at its designated arrival gate at roughly 2126, 56 minutes late. The 2210 hours onward SYD - TPE longer leg is likely to depart at about 2235 if there are no identified problems or unseemly delays.

While it works most of the time, an inherent problem with the CI and EK TransTasman westbounds is that if the evening arrivals in SYD are significantly late, it can occasionally mean passengers (and crew) being delayed overnight due to the need to take off by 2300 hours unless the Federal Minister's delegate grants a dispensation.

Tuesday 7 February sees CI56 from CHC to SYD expected to arrive at about 2120 hours, 50 minutes late. Its onward departure to TPE (due at 2210 ex SYD) will be delayed but hopefully will be prior to curfew, although not by much.

CI58 from CHC to MEL during the evening of Wednesday 8 February arrived at 2213, 33 minutes late due to the earlier TransTasman (and before that, ex TPE) CI57 being more than an hour late.

The scheduled 2310 hours onward leg from MEL to TPE will be at least slightly delayed. On 7 February in SYD, CI turned around its A333 in 79 minutes to depart at 2247 for TPE, beating the curfew.

Friday 10 February sees CI55, the 1240 hours early afternoon SYD across the ditch to CHC not having become airborne until 1351. Aircraft is A333 B-18312.

Tuesday 7 February sees CI56 from CHC to SYD expected to arrive at about 2120 hours, 50 minutes late. Its onward departure to TPE (due at 2210 ex SYD) will be delayed but hopefully will be prior to curfew, although not by much.

What time did these two make it out of SYD?
